General

  • Mission:
  • Our mission is to give children an inspirational learning experience by providing their schools and local communities with interactive and authentic programs revolving around science and natural history.

  • History:
  • Colossal Fossils is unique. Though it is a very young business, it has much support from educators, business people, and city officials. It was recently announced that Wisconsin state's grade school science rankings were the worst in the nation. It's Colossal Fossils' goal to get kids excited about science and learning again, and to inspire them to pursue education beyond the classroom.
Using a group of engaging educational activities, sounds, lights, decorations, and museum-quality, research-quality dinosaur skeleton replicas, Colossal Fossils wants to create a portable museum that can travel from school to school throughout the state, and eventually the entire Midwest. On average, the closest museums are two to three hours away from each school. Having a museum show up at the front door of a school allows the teachers to take their time. There's no need to rush. Instead, they can bring their kids to the museum everyday.
Able to fit inside a standard-sized school gym, Colossal Fossils will have dinosaur bones ranging from six-foot skulls, seven-foot leg bones, eggs, skin impressions, and "Big Al", a twenty-five foot Allosaurus from the Jurassic period. "Big Al" is one of the most famous dinosaurs in the world, being the main subject of books, games, and television documentaries. A large number of broken bones and injuries on this animal will get children engaged. This opportunity will allow kids to get up-close and personal with these enormous animals.
To date, we have collaborated with our local art museum, the well-known Leigh Yawkey Woodson art museum during their exhibition of "Dinotopia" artwork by James Gurney. A member of Colossal Fossils gave informational talks to kids of all ages, and was a feature guest at the museum's "Art Beyond Sight" program, an event for visually impaired people. The adults, ranging in age from 17 to 65, were able to hold 200 million-year-old fossils. The feedback was quite uplifting and very positive.
Now, we are in the process of acquiring the larger research-quality replicas on our wish list, in our effort to offer bigger and better services.
