General

  • Mission:
  • To provide environmental education to underprivileged children in the Charleston County area, giving them an opportunity they otherwise would not be able to participate in.

  • History:
  • Local Outreach was started by senior naturalist Cody Rossetti in his second season at Barrier Island (2009-2010). He noticed that although we were reaching a lot of kids through the schools that visit the Barrier Island program, there were a lot of low-income schools in the Charleston area that would never be able to afford a trip to St. Christopher.

He envisioned something that would reach out to the kids in those schools and bring a hands-on science experience along with the love we strive to share with the children who step onto St. Christopher property by bringing the experience to them.

A big part of that vision was that we would provide these things without charging the school, since they were being limited mostly by money, and wouldn’t ask for anything in return, there would be no marketing of our existing programs, it would simply be a ministry to reach out to them.
In the first year Cody started by focusing on 4th and 5th grade classes in schools on Johns Island. He contacted teachers of those grades, offering school visits and ended up scheduling three visits during that school year.

In the 2010-2011 school year the Local Outreach program was passed to senior naturalist Lucy Williams. She contacted principles instead of targeting specific teachers and widened the focus to all public elementary schools in Charleston County. There were 9 school visits that year in 1st-6th grade classes. There was also promotion of the Barrier Island Program, with brochures given to teachers at school visits. Senior Naturalist, Leah Andersen assisted with the administrative parts of the program, deciding what types of paperwork should exist and creating templates that could be used in the future.

In its third year, Senior Naturalist Julia Menei took over the program. She sent an initial e-mail to Principal’s of Elementary Schools in the Charleston County School district. After getting only a few responses she sent the e-mail to Principal’s of Middle Schools in the Charleston County School district as well. During the year, 11 school trips were booked. We were also able to book a career fair and a family fair. Frierson’s Family Fair is something Barrier Island has participated in in the past, however David put that scheduling under the jurisdiction of the Local Outreach Coordinator. A Library was also contacted for us to bring our program to and Julia hopes this will be a larger part of the program so that we can raise funds.
