General

  • Mission:
  • Calaveras Repertory Theatre (CRT) is a small professional theatre company dedicated to presenting challenging new work and exciting interpretations of the classics, specializing in plays that explore the possibilities of language and poetry in modern life.

  • History:
  • Calaveras Repertory Theatre (CRT) is a small professional theatre company dedicated to presenting challenging new work and exciting interpretations of the classics, specializing in plays that explore the possibilities of language and poetry in modern life. CRT has presented a full range of classic plays by Moliere, Synge, Wilde, Beckett, Coward, Williams, and, of course, Shakespeare whom we perform often. We have set Othello in modern day Korea, Merchant of Venice in 1930’s New York ,and King Lear in war-torn Afghanistan. Hamlet is scheduled to open March 8, 2007 with a strong local cast.

.CRT’s new playwright program develops new writers from a variety of cultural backgrounds. Asian Voices/Shakespearean Connection explored the connection between contemporary Asian-American experience and Shakespeare’s Othello. World Laughter explored comedy as seen by a variety of different cultures. New Year’s Day provided four different perspectives on the New Years Holiday. Insider/Outsider looked at little known aspects of different cultures. All of the staged readings grew out of master classes taught by Philip Kan Gotanda (playwright), Tony Taccone (Berkeley Rep) and Herbert Siguenza (Culture Clash) and CRT Artistic Director, John Ribovich. In addition, New Year’s Day took the one act plays from conception to full production with performances in Milpitas, Redwood City and San Jose. (CRT has also presented three full-length productions of new plays in its ten year history: Elbert Hubbard’s Scrapbook, Christmas with the Brother’s Grimm, and Brother #1.) We recently developed a script that lampooned modern advertising , Sex in the Title, and are mounting an all new translation/adaptation of Voltaire’s Candide.

Our South Bay Scene Nights from 2007-2008 , encouraged emerging playwrights, four of whom, Leah Halper, Valerie Leghorn, Scott McMorrow and Michelle Ianiro went on to write
plays that were fully produced at other theatres. We continued to offer our school tour, Page-to-Stage which played to approximately 6,000 students. (Page-to-Stage encourages a love of literature and theatre by bringing classics from children's’ literature to life on the stage (Our most recent tour featured pieces by R. L. Stevenson, L. Frank Baum, and the Brothers Grimm.)

All of these programs employ professional actors and community members in various capacities. Our professional actors and instructors (veterans of ACT, Berkeley Rep, TheatreWorks, California Theatre Center) bring a high level of expertise to their work and work to develop the local talent represented in our programs.

Education has been a critical component of our mission since the company’s inception, ten years ago. Although we are proud of the professional quality and diversity of our main stage productions, we are also making a significant contribution to the community with our high quality in-school programs for grades K-12. Our charge is to instill a love of literature, reading and participation in theatre - as artists or as audience members - in every student we reach, and growth of our programs indicates that we are achieving that goal.
