General

  • Mission:
  • OUR MISSION:
The City of Frederick's Recreation Department was founded in 1927 for the purpose of providing recreational opportunities to all Frederick City citizens regardless of age, race or religion. To also provide, utilize and maintain parks, swimming pools and sports facilities for the public’s use and benefits.

  • History:
  • The City of Frederick Parks and Recreation Program has been serving Frederick City youth since 1927. With the support of the Recreation Commission, the Recreation Department has staffed, supervised active and relaxing recreational enjoyment for the children of Frederick City. Programs include the Summer Playground Programs, Summer Camp Programs, Talley Rec Center Activities, Pool Programs, and many others that can be viewed on the City's website under the Parks and Recreation Department.

Over the years due to City budget constraints, the number of Summer Playground programs has varied. From 1997 through 1999, the City provided activities at 16 playgrounds; in 2000, 13 playgrounds. In 2003, the programs began to suffer some bigger decreases with only 7 playgrounds in operation. In 2004, we were only able to staff 4 locations.

In 2009, the program was almost eliminated from the budget. Due to public, Mayor and Board of Alderman support, and most importantly, due to a private donation in the amount of $22,500 (50% the operating cost to run 4 programs) the Playground programs was inserted back into the City budget.

The program began as a free program for all children who registered until the summer of 1999 when The City began to charge a $25 fee for non-city registered participants. The fee has been raised to $120 in 2011/2012. In 2005, to help with budget constraints, a regisration fee was added for city residents in the amount of $10. Today the fee for a city registered participant is $80.

We have seen a decline in the number of participants who register for the program since the fees have been increased and the number of programs decreased. In 2008, 277 children were benefitting from the program. In 2011, 118 participated, which is more than 50% less.
