General

  • Mission:
  • The Citizens Coal Council, a 501(c)(3) organization, is a national federation of approximately 200 national and grassroots groups and individuals working to promote justice in the coalfields through increased regulatory protection against coal industry abuses while also advocating for stronger laws. The mission of CCC is to build and strengthen coalitions among people in coal impacted communities, assisting them in defending existing environmental regulations and promoting better environmental policies. CCC is the only national organization working exclusively on coal-related issues. Our work with communities has advanced transparency in federal and state coal policies and regulation, in addition to increasing citizen access and input in the decision making and enforcement processes.

  • History:
  • In the mid 1980s, many citizens in coal-impacted areas across the United States- from Appalachia to the Navajo Nation- observed a flagrant lack of oversight of the mining industry by regulatory authorities resulting in pollution, destruction of property from blasting and mine subsidence, loss of water supplies, and innumerable ethical violations by coal companies. In response, they formed the Citizens Coal Project and began to communicate with each other about the problems they were facing. They realized the importance of banding together to create a unified voice to combat these problems and formalized their union into the Citizens Coal Council (CCC) in 1989. CCC’s activities reflect its drive to educate and organize at-risk coalfield communities and to advocate at the national level for increased protection of communities and the environment.
