General

  • Mission:
  • A Dual Mission: Teaching Students and Training Teachers
Breakthrough Atlanta’s mission is unique in that it has the dual objective of improving the educational trajectory of highly-motivated middle school students, and inspiring young people to enter the field of education. Breakthrough’s success is due to a unique combination of elements that result in an exciting educational experience.
    Breakthrough Atlanta’s mission is twofold:

•We provide an academically intense pathway to college for motivated metro Atlanta public school students to encourage academic success.

•We provide an intensive hands-on teacher training experience (internship) for high school and college students, inspiring a new generation of teachers.

We motivate students at the critical age when they are searching for role models, and making choices that will have dramatic results on their future. Further, Breakthrough Atlanta utilizes enthusiastic and talented teacher interns who serve as mentors and role models, and bring to life the idea that “it’s cool to be smart.” Our academically rigorous program prepares young people for high school and college, and teacher interns for the classroom.

  • History:
  • Modeled after the original Summerbridge program at University High School in San Francisco, Breakthrough Atlanta was founded in 1995, and launched its inaugural program in 1996. Since Breakthrough Atlanta’s beginning, the program has served over 400 young teachers and more than 700 students from metro Atlanta public schools.

•95% of Breakthrough Atlanta students are the first in their families to ever attend college.

•85% of Breakthrough Atlanta’s students matriculate into colleges and universities.

Over the last several years, Breakthrough Atlanta has more than doubled the number of students served. Breakthrough launched the opening of a second site in June 2010 at the Atlanta Youth Academy in Southeast Atlanta. This summer BTA will have over 90 students and 30 teachers participating in the Breakthrough program at this facility.
