  • Mission:
  • Atlanta Center for Self Sufficiency (ACSS) empowers homeless individuals to achieve economic self sufficiency and their ultimate potential to thrive in life.

  • Overview:
  • Atlanta Center for Self Sufficiency plays a critical role along Atlanta's continuum of care to break the cycle of homelessness and is uniquely positioned to assess, train and motivate individuals to achieve economic self sufficiency and begin to thrive. ACSS fulfills our mission by offering programs that address tangible and emotional barriers to employment and self sufficiency. Our programs include CareerWorks, a job readiness training and placement program; Veterans Employment Assistance Program, a targeted initiative aimed at helping veterans re-integrate into the workforce; and Café 458, a life stabilization program and restaurant for homeless adults with mental and physical disabilities. Additionally, ACSS operates social enterprise ventures -- Café 458 Weekend Brunch and CST Janitorial Services -- which provide unrestricted revenue for the agency and job opportunities for homeless individuals.

  • History:
  • Atlanta Center for Self Sufficiency (ACSS) was formed through a merger of two long standing nonprofit agencies -- Atlanta Enterprise Center and Samaritan House of Atlanta -- to embrace a stronger vision for breaking the cycle of homelessness among individuals and families within the Greater Atlanta area. The merger was supported by the Regional Commission on Homelessness and the philanthropic community because it provided a unique opportunity to bring renewed leadership, energy, and efficiency to the homeless services arena. Atlanta Enterprise Center was originally founded in 1982 as a ministry of St. Luke's Episcopal Church to help the homeless and near homeless achieve self-sufficiency to include permanent employment and safe, affordable housing. Samaritan House of Atlanta was founded in 1986, with the mission of providing employment readiness for homeless people through job readiness and life skills training programs. With almost 30 years of experience working with this population, ACSS was built upon the strength, successes, and synergies of these two veteran organizations to create an innovative entity with the capacity to truly transform lives.
