  • Mission:
  • The mission of Change is Simple, Inc. is to instill environmental and social responsibility in our communities through sustainability enrichment programs. By educating individuals on the cumulative impacts of their choices, we seek to inspire, empower and motivate others to protect our future.

  • History:
  • Change is Simple is based on the idea that we all have a responsibility to preserve our limited resources and protect the integrity of our planet, and conservation is the most effective means of doing so. We each have hundreds of opportunities every week to make more responsible choices in order to live more simply and sustainably. Change is Simple takes a realistic approach to sustainability; greening your life does not have to be overly complicated. We teach others how to make simple changes everyday that will make a significant positive impact on our environment, our health, and the social fabric of our communities. Never underestimate the power of individual changes; one action can inspire a whole community.

Founder Lauren Belmonte is an experienced environmental scientist and sustainability specialist. She has worked in both the private consulting industry as well as the public sector, most recently the Massachusetts Military Division. In her work experience and in working with clients, she found too many individuals and even entire organizations that had little regard for the environment and their impacts on it. Her workplace efforts to ensure environmental compliance were often looked at as a roadblock rather than the compliant and responsible method of conducting business. This presented her with constant challenges and left her wondering the root causes of this lack of awareness and understanding of our individual and shared impacts on the environment. There seemed to be an entire generation, perhaps several generations that lacked the social responsibility that goes into protecting our earth. Ms. Belmonte was inspired by the immediate and pressing need to educate the next generation, instilling environmental values in our youth. Children need to understand they have a significant influence on this world, and provided with the right knowledge and passion they will learn how to preserve it and develop a sense of ownership, curiosity and respect.

Ms. Belmonte decided to take action and be proactive about change. Based on her research she found that there was an enormous void in the Massachusetts elementary curriculum and the structure of educational planning; hardly any time was devoted to environmental awareness, environmental science or sustainability. Consequently, this lack of sustainability awareness had bled into our local communities, not only in schools, but also in households and businesses. The need for a solution became evident. Change is Simple was founded and the mission and nature of programs that needed to be employed were clear.

The Change is Simple enrichment and service programs are focused on grades k-8 when children are the most open developmentally to assimilating new ideas. Children have already been proven catalysts for social change. In the same way that students from a generation ago brought home the “Don’t Smoke” and “Just Say No” campaigns to their parents, our students are bringing the Change is Simple sustainability lessons home to their parents, siblings and community. Change is Simple strives to reach beyond the individual student and engage entire communities to create a sense of shared social responsibility. Through awareness, our goal is for children, teachers, and parents to develop environmentally conscious habits that will continue for the rest of their lives.
