General

  • Mission:
  • Our mission is to help transition batlle proven military veterans into business leadership roles, by providing a shared risk fellowship with corporate partners.

  • History:
  • Battle to Boardroom was founded by two veteran Navy Officers.: Kyle Killian and Armando Garza.

    Kyle Killian:
" I served three tours of duty in Iraq from 2004, 2006, and 2007. During my tours, I served with the “best of the best” - special operators, soldiers, sailors and marines. Upon returning from war, I became concerned when some of my colleagues (highly trained special operators), were unable to find decent careers back home. Some were relegated to selling used cars, or taking security contract jobs back in Iraq. Over a two year period, five colleagues of mine lost their battle with PTSD, and took their life. I was shocked to learn of these warriors losing a very difficult internal battle and I firmly believe that the lack of a meaningful career played into these tragic results."

As these events unfolded, news reports began discussing a growing problem with veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan suffering from higher unemployment than the general population. In fact, veteran unemployment was growing. An industry report (SHRM, 201) that stated while hiring managers recognize universal qualities of veterans, there were ongoing concerns; specifically, hiring managers were concerned about how our skills translate, how long it takes to assimilate in the job and culture, and perceptions of PTSD and health related concerns.

In November, Kyle reached out to the co-founder, Armando Garza, a graduate of the US Naval Academy who has a MBA from Darden Business School at the University of Virgina, and over a decade of business experience working with Fortune 500 firms such as Procter & Gamble, Frito-Lay and Yum Brands. During his professional career, Armando has been a part of and has created Leadership Development programs in the companies for whom he has worked. This experience and insight led to the creation of a shared risk fellowship program.

Many excellent programs are out there to address veteran hiring initiatives. Yet, veteran unemployment continues to climb. This was our opportunity - we believe there is a need to “Fill the gap” because of these ongoing industry concerns, so we created a shared risk platform to place highly qualified combat veterans into future leader roles, with businesses willing and needing to develop future leaders. We believe a structured leadership development program paired with executive coaching, can make an impact on the aforementioned perceptions. Thus, the fellowship program was developed to address this gap, and in November of 2011, we began our journey as Battle to Boardroom.
