    Vision: Aging Together’s vision is that the needs and preferences of older adults will be recognized and honored as our region creates livable communities for all ages. We want all citizens aging together to enjoy a lifelong sense of place and community, to be able to contribute to their community and when needed to have ready access to diverse supports from family, friends, helping organizations and a responsive local government.

  • Overview:
  • Aging Together, a broad consortium of organizations and individuals in the five counties of the Rappahannock-Rapidan region, is a collaborative effort to help our localities prepare for an unprecedented growth in the older population and to assure that local residents will have the services and supports they need as they age.
    This partnership is built on an alliance of more than 150 organizations and individuals who actively participate in one or more county-based teams and regional workgroups and collaborate across agencies, counties and interest areas. Members include senior citizens, caregivers, community hospitals, service providers, schools, representatives of the faith community, businesses, law enforcement and first responders, local government, and other concerned citizens.
    Using this unique model of collaboration at both local and regional levels, Aging Together has changed the way our communities do business and has been looked to at both state and national levels as a leader in the field of aging.
    Aging Together’s vision is that the needs and preferences of older adults will be recognized and honored as our region creates livable communities for all ages. We want all citizens aging together to enjoy a life long sense of place and community, to be able to contribute to their community and when needed to have ready access to diverse supports from family, friends, helping organizations and a responsive local government
    Aging Together mobilizes the efforts toward this vision. Our small staff is able to do the behind the scenes work that service organizations may not be able to do given their intense workloads. These programs are then delivered by our partner organizations, assuring their sustainability in the community. Through these partnerships, and with a focus on action and results, Aging Together is able to support the five counties of our region.

    The impact we seek includes:
    • Older adults and their families have access to an expanded range of options for long term care and supportive services (with Aging Together serving as a catalyst and resource developer)
    • Communities and decision-makers value older adults and their families and consider their needs and preferences in all local planning (with Aging Together serving as a resource and source of information to assist decision-makers)

  • History:
  • Aging Together began in 1998 when service providers across the five counties of our region realized they were experiencing a dramatic growth in referrals related to older adults. Research indicated they were just on the cusp of this trend given the aging of the Baby Boomers. These providers pooled funds to conduct the region's first elder needs assessment.

    Using the results of this needs assessment they were able to secure 6 years of funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Community Partnerships for Older Adults to create a regional collaboration that developed and began implementation of a strategic plan to ready the community for the influx of older adults, take advantage of their gifts and create places in which people of all ages could feel secure in growing older near family, friends and supportive services.
    Using this partnership model and strategic plan Aging Together has been able to make dramatic impacts on service delivery, support for caregiving families, transportation, access to healthcare and medication, social opportunities, technology and numerous other initiatives.
    The partnership has received funding from state and local governments, federal sources, and various grants from corporations and foundations. Aging Together is now an accepted part of the community, often a leader in convening stakeholders from across the region to take action to improve our communities. The partnership staff and leadership are the “go-to” people related to supporting older adults and their communities. We are regularly contacted by local government for technical assistance and have recently begun to support area businesses, helping them relate to their aging customer base and to address the needs of the growing number of their staff who are providing care for an aging family member.
    To date we have expanded or enhanced a variety of community services for older adults and their families including access to legal services, adult day health care, volunteer supports, transportation, home repair, free medications, in-home training and support for families providing care for people with dementia and social opportunities for older adults. We have provided training to attorneys, law enforcement, EMS/First responders, the medical community and small businesses and non-profits. Aging Together has generated $2,264,820 from new sources outside the region and $412,132 in support from local government and donors.
