  • Mission:
  • Botetourt County Library is a public library that seeks to offer materials and services to all citizens of the community. One of the means of accomplishing this goal is to purchase materials that provide information and support education and recreation. The library maintains four branches and a bookmobile for the citizens of Botetourt County, Virginia. We are dedicated to providing free public service to the taxpayers of our region. In addition to the loan of books and other materials we are committed to offering reference service, children's services to all ages, internet access by both hardwired computers and wireless service, opportunity to use copiers, send faxes, utilitze our meeting space, and otherwise provide a pleasant facilities for reading or study.

  • History:
  • Botetourt County Library was established as an independent County library in 1979. It was formerly part of a regional system with Rockbridge County, Virginia. The original library building was a historic jail in the town of Fincastle, Virginia. Bookmobile service was first added in 1980 as well as a small branch in the town of Buchanan. A new 3,500 library building was constructed in Fincastle in 1984. In 1988, the Blue Ridge Library branch near the border between Roanoke and Botetourt Counties was opened. This 8,000 square foot facility was jointly constructed and owned by the two counties and operated under this arrangement until 2010 when the library became wholly owned by Botetourt County. The library's Buchanan Branch moved to a renovated facility on Main Street in 1998. It has 5,500 square feet of space compared with 800 square feet in its previous location. The Fincastle Library underwent a major remodeling and expansion in 2003 when it became an 8,000 square foot building with a meeting room. The previous version of the building had no separate meeting space. The library purchased a new bookmobile in 2004 which is still in use today. The bookmobile serves over 400 persons throughout mostly rural Botetourt County. The library constructed a new branch in Eagle Rock in 2010. It is the largest library in the County with 9,600 square feet of space. Unfortunately, the Eagle Rock Library was built just as the recession began.. Many shelves remain empty. The library has been successful in constructing and remodeling facilities but recent years have led to a very inadequate budget for purchasing new materials. Our budget for books dropped from $125,000 in FY10 to $80,000 in FY11 and FY12. The adopted budget for FY13 lowers our budget for books to only $40,000. Our ability to provide new books, dvds, audiobooks, and e-books for our patrons will be severely reduced. Botetourt County Library is fortunate to participate in a consortium with our partner libraries in Roanoke County, Roanoke City, and Salem City. We may borrow materials from them and loan to them as well. This arrangement began in 1996 and is perfectly seamless to patrons. One library card acquired in the Roanoke Valley will work at all seventeen libraries. Patrons may borrow and return to any library in the consortium. Botetourt patrons may not borrow the latest in-demand materials from the partner libraries, however. The decline in our purchasing power in recent years has led to decreases in our purchases of materials of all kinds. Consequently, the growth of our non-fiction collections, large-print materials, audiobooks, dvds and all other materials has dwindled. The consortium began offering downloadable e-books in 2011 and we have participated in this service as well as much as our finances will permit.
