General

  • Mission:
  • To promote the inclusion and integration of adults with mental retardation within our society and through our programs, improve the quality of life of adults with mental retardation in Puerto Rico.

  • Overview:
  • The current activities at AMPI (Asociacion Mayaguezana de Personas con Inpedimentos) include a daily activities centre for mildly retarded adults (CEMECAV) where our participants receive daily services that include life skills training, recreational activities, gardening skills, transportation, health and legal coordination services, basic reading and writing skills, and where they can pursue participation in our summer residential camp, as well as participation in our assisted housing services. Currently, we deliver daily service to more than 60 adults with mental disabilities and more than 25 live in AMPI’s houses around Mayaguez.

  • History:
  • AMPI's services began in 1984 when group of parents of adults with mental retardation seeking services for their adult children that had used all the services available through the government and private organisation in this area. At that time the organisation started with 14 parents and participants. Through the years organisation has grown into a complete service organisation servicing more than 400 participants from different parts of the island . These services include but are not limited to independent living skills, education, job readiness, literacy, recreation and sports, transportation, medical services, lunch program, information and Assistive Housing project sponsored by HUD. AMPI has been developing its services in direct relation to the needs assessment of the clientele served. All our programs are strictly geared to the adults with mental retardation since it is one of the least served populations worldwide. This population has never been priority for any given government agency or entity so AMPI has chosen to remain loyal to its foundations and continue to grow and develop programs for these population as the needs are identified.
