General

  • Mission:
  • The Collegiate YMCA develops cause-driven leaders while connecting campus to community–and that’s what we’ve been doing on Pittsburgh college campuses for more than 100 years.

  • Overview:
  • Sharing the belief that freedom, dignity, and opportunity for all people are essential to the realization of a more just and humane world, the Collegiate YMCA works to expand social commitment and foster meaningful friendships. We strive to serve the community, to develop leadership skills, and to expand our ethical understanding.

Unlike what many think of when conjuring images of the local Y, a pool, gymnasium and health and wellness center, our branch has programming that reaches beyond the boundaries of four walls and into the fabric of the Pittsburgh community. We’re student centered and dedicated to developing cause-driven leaders.

What makes the Collegiate YMCA strong? Many things–dedicated cause-driven college and high school volunteers who served more than 30,000 hours last year working toward a common goal in the community, people helping each other, a strong sense of values and the feeling that we all belong. Every day, the Y works side-by-side with our neighbors to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.

  • History:
  • The Collegiate YMCA, whose members range from 15 - 30 years old, can offer once in a lifetime experiences for college and high school students. Whether service is with other students, for the community or the world; the YMCA fosters leadership, service, and friendship to its diverse membership
    and program participants.

In 1905 the Collegiate YMCA began to serve students and faculty at the University of Pittsburgh.  Through the years the YMCA has provided counseling,  alternative spring breaks,
off-campus housing, student employment, chartered bus trips home, volunteer placement in community agencies and Freshman Orientations.

Today the Collegiate YMCA drives university students to serve others, gain leadership, enrich lives and impact the community while instilling the YMCA's character development strategy
