  • Mission:
  • Collect and recycle soap and shampoo products discarded by the hospitality industry every day. Through the distribution of these and other donated hygiene products to impoverished people, prevent the millions of deaths caused by hygiene-related illnesses every day.

  • Overview:
  • Due to the amount of deaths caused by poor hygiene and the waste that builds up from throwing away soap and shampoo products, Clean the World Foundation, Inc. decided to use soap to save lives. According to the World Health Organization, 1/3 of the diseases that kill children under the age of five could be prevented by hand washing with bar soap. Every year, more than 3.5 million children under five years old die from acute lower respiratory-tract infection and diarrheal illness. Most of these preventable deaths occur in lower-income countries where sanitation resources are scarce. The organization is responsible for collecting, sorting and processing discarded soap, shampoo, conditioner, and lotion product donations from participating hospitality partners. Delivering these recycled product donations to domestic homeless shelters and impoverished countries. In the process, Clean the World has put over 9,500,000 soap bars and 200,000 pounds of shampoo and conditioner back into human use, simultaneously eliminating over 600 tons of waste. The soap soaks in a sanitizing solution and is then treated with a steam/pressure combination. Clean the World then tests the soap’s pH level and cools it for packaging. To test the recycling process, Clean the World hired Tri-Tech Laboratories – a Florida State certified testing facility. The treated soap was tested for sterilization levels. The result was the complete elimination of all the pathogens. Over 95% of our cash donations and program fees go directly into program operations. Clean the World works with our Hospitality Partners to train staff on the recycling process. Bins are provided for housekeeping staff to deposit collected soap and bottled amenities. Online training videos and housekeeping instruction posters are also provided to enhance understanding. We are reducing waste in the hospitality industry-one of the largest producers of solid waste in the world. in three years of operation, we have diverted more than 1.4 million pounds (700 tons) of hotel waste from polluting landfills. Clean the World is changing the way the hotel industry views waste and recycling, adding a component of compassion, health, and hygiene benefits to the mix for better value and global social impact. Clean the World partners with UPS to ensure that all deliveries of soaps and bottled amenities from our hospitality partners will be recognized as "carbon neutral" and eligible to earn carbon offset tax credits to help protect our planet. Clean the World's mission to help people around the world is reflected in its hiring practices at home. Nearly 90% of Clean the World staff were unemployed before being hired. Staff members bring a diversity of professional experiences to the social enterprise. Some employees started as volunteers and worked their way into employment with the organization, while others began as independent contractors or part-time employees before earning full-time status. If a 100-room hotel partners with Clean the World, for just $81 in monthly program fees; provides 71 lbs. of soap and 53 lbs. of bottled amenities will be diverted from the landfill each month; 4,968 bottles to be recycled for plastic annuals. 4,733 bars of soap and 9,976 bottled amenities to be distributed to children and families worldwide annually. Think of the children who will be affected by those donations? How many lives will be changed? How many children will be healthier by virtue of receiving and washing with soaps provided by these hospitality partners? How great is the social impact created by just one bar of soap when it is placed in the hands of someone in desperate need of improved hygiene, personal care, and self-worth?

  • History:
  • Clean the World Foundation, Inc. was founded in February 2009 by two individuals, Shawn Seipler and Paul Till. Clean the World is a Florida not-for-profit corporation under 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Clean the World Foundation is a not-for-profit social enterprise founded in February 2009, and headquartered in Orlando, Florida with a commitment to saving lives and protecting our planet. We offer sustainable, socially responsible, and charitable programs and services through local, national and global initiatives. Each day, 9,000 children around the world die from diseases that can be prevented by washing with bar soap, while in North America thousands of hotels discard millions of pounds of soap products which often end up in already overflowing landfills and contaminate fragile groundwater systems. In response, the mission of Clean the World is mighty, but our solution is simple — save the millions of children whose lives are lost each year to acute lower-respiratory infection (pneumonia) and diarrheal illness (cholera) by distributing recycled soap with the appropriate educational tools to sustain good personal hygiene practices. By recycling and sterilizing the collected soap products from hospitality partners, and then re-distributing them to vulnerable populations, we can reduce the effects of these deadly diseases up to 65%. With each recycled item, needy children are given the power to combat deadly diseases with the simplest of weapons: soap and water, and in the process, hundreds of tons of needless waste are kept out of our world’s landfills.
In two years of operation, Clean the World has become the largest global recycler of hotel amenities, diverting an estimated 550 tons of hotel waste from polluting landfills, in turn distributing more than 8 million bars of soap to children and families in the United States, and 42 countries worldwide. We collaborate with over 250 hospitality partners, including Walt Disney World Resorts, Westgate Resorts, Starwood, Harrah’s, and other major hotel and motel brands nationwide. We have also built an international distribution network through strategic partnerships with Non-Governmental Organizations that include World Vision, Harvest Time International, and many others. In our own community, Clean the World directly distributes to more than 20 domestic homeless shelters, faith-based organizations, and community service agencies.
