General

  • Mission:
  • Candlelighters is dedicated to enriching the lives of children who have cancer by providing hope, support, encouragement, advocacy, and education to those children, their families, and the community at large. We are deeply committed to making every effort to provide stability to our families.

  • Overview:
  • Candlelighters, is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization that serves children with cancer, ages 0 to 21, and the families that care for them. It is the only no-cost provider in the region that offers support services for children with cancer. Our agency offers emergency financial assistance, transportation, scholarships, caregiver workshops, therapy, summer oncology camps, and many other services and activities. Financial support is provided for as long as a child is in treatment (usually three years) and for six months after to ensure the family returns to normalcy.

Our Family Enrichment Program promotes “strong families” through emergency financial assistance, therapeutic services and workshops for our children with cancer and their family members. Workshops focus on educating families about cancer, financial planning, health and nutrition, community resources and communication skills. Our program includes therapy sessions and activities, caregiver training, strengthening marriage workshops, parenting classes and recreational/play therapy.

Our programs will stimulate and enhance the lives of a diverse population of clients served, enhance quality of life for clients that will in turn produce beneficial outcomes, achieve cost-effective use of resources, and ensure services to clients who would otherwise be underserved if served at all. Since Candlelighters incorporated in 1980, we have been able to consistently demonstrate that we serve a significant number of clients and withdrawing this project will have a significant impact on the target population.

All children who are diagnosed with cancer are referred to us by their physician and qualify for our program. Demand for our services continues to rise, Increasing 20% in 2011, over the previous year. This not only represents more individual needs for our services, but also an increase in the number of families with children in treatment. Our program serves Children’s Hospital at Providence and now the El Paso Children’s Hospital at University Medical Center.

Candlelighters is the only no-cost service provider in the region that supports children with cancer, ages 0 – 21 and the families that care for them. We currently serve approximately 300 children in active treatment and provide extended services to over 1,500 registered families in the El Paso area. Nearly nine out of ten of our families are economically challenged; 65% of our families fall under the extremely low income category, 23% are low and 12% are moderate. Ninety-four percent of our clients are Hispanic.

  • History:
  • Candlelighters was formed in El Paso in 1978 by a small group of parents brought together by one common concern: their children had cancer. Encouraged by a local physician, they formed a support group to share information and experiences. At the time there were no resources available to provide information, financial assistance, or the emotional support necessary to adequately cope with this life threatening disease. In 1983, Candlelighters grew into a nonprofit (501(c)(3) organization affiliated with Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation. In January 1985, as the need for services increased, the first Candlelighters office officially opened its doors. Volunteers from the community joined forces with the parents to assure Candlelighters success. Since our founding, we have been devoted to serving the needs and improving the quality of life for children diagnosed with cancer and their families. The many programs and services provided by Candlelighters are all designed to fulfill our mission.

We currently have five full-time staff members and one part-time which consists of: CEO, Operations Manager, Family Services Coordinator, Family Case Manager, Development Director and a Receptionist. Volunteers from the community joined forces to ensure Candlelighters’ success with professionals serving on the Board of Directors and various committees. With this joint effort, the organization has been able to continue to help meet the needs of its growing participants. We have eight volunteers that assist our agency on a weekly basis and have been with us for over five years. We have other volunteers that help as the program events are coming up. We currently have over 150 volunteers year round.
