  • Mission:
  • The mission of Charlotte Bilingual Preschool (CBP) is to prepare Spanish-speaking children for success in school and life by providing English based early childhood education, and by connecting their families with the community and its resources.

  • Overview:
  • CBP provides high-quality preschool opportunities to low-income, at-risk Hispanic/Latino children, ages 3-5, in Charlotte-Mecklenburg. Children are taught English in the classroom, while families are connected with community resources that will help them successfully assimilate into an English-speaking culture. Families also receive ongoing parenting education and social support.

CBP currently operates 3 preschool classrooms and serves 36 students. We plan to open at least 2 additional classrooms over the next 2 months, each serving 12 students. Each class runs for 3.5 hours each day, Monday-Friday, and is supervised by 2 High Scope trained teachers. Students participate in a stimulating daily routine that includes English language instruction, reading and book exploration and music and movement. Children visit the school's interactive art studio 3 times per week, participate in weekly "Music and Movement" sessions offered by the Allegro Foundation and enjoy field trips throughout the year. Teachers provide instruction in Math and Science, Creative Representation, Social Relations and Personal Initiative. CBP also provides support for children with some special needs and mild developmental disabilities.

Our Family Support program helps low-income, Spanish-speaking families increase self-sufficiency, pursue academic excellence and improve their lives. Programming includes English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, literacy activities, life skills training and community referrals.

Up to 20% of CBP parents are believed to be illiterate based on their lack of Spanish literacy skills and their inability to understand and undertake practices that lead to safe and healthy lifestyles. The Family Program Facilitator designs and implements basic parenting programs as well as community and cultural seminars in Spanish. Parents are strongly encouraged to attend on-site ESL classes and further their education and training in the community. Armed with knowledge of the rudiments of life in America, the confidence levels of parents increase and they are able to seek out additional educational prospects.

CBP remains committed to providing high-quality programming to students and families. In FY2011, CPB increased its grant requests and streamlined its budget. Our organization has worked to maintain quality programming and services, without increasing expenses. CBP’s priority remains the children and families we serve. Our organization is extremely unique and supports an underserved, multicultural population that will contribute to our community for years to come. By forming strategic partnerships, increasing funding and committing to quality improvements, we plan to expand each year and increase the number of students and families served in Mecklenburg County.

  • History:
  • CBP was created in 1999 to address the needs of Hispanic/Latino families in the east Charlotte area. Many Latino youth enter school with few or no formal preschool experiences and struggle to overcome a severe language barrier. CBP works to prepare these students for a lifetime of education by offering high-quality programming and ongoing assessment of their educational, physical and social needs.

Our organization recently changed its name to Charlotte Bilingual Preschool (formerly Central Avenue Bilingual Preschool) to better reflect our desire and goal to support families throughout the city of Charlotte. The opening of a satellite preschool in the Elizabeth neighborhood supports our plans for growth and increased service to youth throughout the county. Furthermore, Charlotte Bilingual Preschool’s Central Avenue location recently became a temporarily licensed program by the State of North Carolina. We anticipate becoming a fully licensed, star-rated program by January 2013. Licensing will allow us access to funding sources that were previously unattainable. It will also provide our school with better oversight and regulation, require compliance with universally accepted program standards and provide access for increased training and technical assistance.

Low-income Hispanic families have no other options for preschool aged children to be taught English, cultural assimilation and school readiness. The city’s Hispanic population has nearly doubled since 2000, from 7% to 13.4%, and the need continues to grow. Our Board of Directors and administrative staff is fully committed to expanding this program and plans to open an additional classroom (serving 12 students) at our Central Avenue site in September. By forming strategic partnerships, increasing funding and committing to quality improvements, we plan to expand each year and increase the number of students and families served in Mecklenburg County.
