General

  • Mission:
  • The Big Brothers Big Sisters mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. The Big Brothers Big Sisters vision is that all children achieve success in life.

  • Overview:
  • Many underprivileged youth have the odds stacked against them. The children served by Big Brothers Big Sisters live in fragile neighborhoods and have an average annual household income of just $25,000. They struggle with performance issues in school. They miss a greater amount of school days and have a higher dropout rate. These children are in great need of the impact a mentoring partnership can provide. A mentoring “match” does just that – encouraging children to be successful in school and to reach their full potential. Our highly-effective and proven mentoring programs empower children by widening their lens to new experiences, enhancing relationship skills, providing positive reinforcement, and improving behaviors and performance in and out of school. We are changing the trajectory of at-risk youth in a way that positively impacts them for the rest of their lives.

  • History:
  • In October of 1972, local beloved pianist Loonis McGlohon organized a steering committee for what would become the first Big Brothers Big Sisters chapter in N.C. – based in Charlotte. The first Big/Little match was made in January, 1973. The Big Sister program started in 1975 and in 1978, BBBS became a sponsored program of United Family Services. In December 2001, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Charlotte (BBBSGC) became an independent 501(c)(3) organization and the new board of directors signed the articles of incorporation. Entering our 40th year of service to the Charlotte region, BBBSGC currently serves nearly 1,400 youth annually in Mecklenburg and Cabarrus counties. We identify children in need—those from single parent, low-income homes—and pair them with mentors to build stronger socio-emotional competencies: improved peer and adult relationships, social acceptance and increased educational expectations - to positively alter the trajectory of their lives.
