  • Mission:
  • The Bangor YMCA strengthens the values of honesty, caring, respect and responsibility through family programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all. The Bangor YMCA encourages and supports individuals and families in their quest for physical, social and emotional well-being.

  • History:
  • In June, 1833, 11 years before George Williams founded the YMCA in London, England, the Bangor Young Men’s Society was created in Bangor, Maine. The Honorable Edward Kent, Governor of Maine, was the Society's first president and he, together with 109 community members, signed the Articles of Organization and Constitution. With the coming of the American Civil War, the Society went through a process of reorganization, joining with other similar organizations and societies and the existing Young Men’s Christian Associations of the United States. They formed the U. S. Christian Commission which proved to be one of the most beneficial agencies in alleviating the suffering and horrors of War, to co-operate with and supplement the work of the United States Government Sanitary Commission.

In 1867, members of this Society, having met and admired YMCA Secretaries on the battlefields, banded themselves together with other citizens and organized themselves as the Bangor Young Men’s Christian Association. A room was secured in the upper floor of the Granite Block at the corner of Park and State Streets. In January 1882, the YMCA was duly organized and incorporated.

Since 1864, YMCAs across the country have adopted programs to meet the needs of our communities. Our YMCA currently offers gym facilities, fitness classes, personal training, and nutritional support to people of all ages and abilities, a support group for breast cancer patients and survivors, childcare programs throughout the day, mentoring groups, after-school support for at-risk youth, community service programs for teens, rehabilitation programs for non-violent first-time youth offenders, recreational sports leagues for youth of all ages and abilities, outdoor adventure programs and trips for community members, and day camp and summer camp programs for children ages 5 to 18. The Bangor YMCA is proud of its wide range of impact, connecting with and supporting community members of all ages, socioeconomic and cultural groups represented in the Bangor area.
