  • Mission:
  • The mission of Classroom Central is to equip students living in poverty to effectively learn by collecting and distributing free school supplies.

  • Overview:
  • Over half of our region's public school students qualify for free and reduced lunch, based on eligibility guidelines set by the federal government. Their parents often cannot cover basic living expenses and buy necessary school supplies, so tens of thousands of children arrive at school empty-handed. Essential tools like pencils and notebook paper are critically important to a child's education and can mean the difference between completing an assignment and failing. Having inadequate supplies hinders students' progress and development, putting them at an educational disadvantage from the very first day of school. In order to address this critical need and to realize our mission, Classroom Central operates a Free Store where teachers and other authorized school personnel can obtain free supplies to enable students living in poverty to have the opportunity to succeed academically. Recognizing a growing need to create different distribution methods, we launched a Classroom Central Mobile Free Store in the fall of 2010. Partnering with companies who volunteer their professional drivers and trucks to help us, we deliver pallets of school supplies to high-need schools in remote areas of our region. We also offer one Saturday teacher shopping day each quarter for the convenience of those who have difficulty getting to our location during the week.

Classroom Central serves six school districts. Five districts are in North Carolina, one district is in South Carolina. The greatest challenge facing Classroom Central in the coming years is the steadily increasing need for our services.

Funding from the Lawrence Foundation will be used to cover general operating expenses, including the purchase of additional school supplies to serve more students in need. These additional products will enable us to increase our inventory in the Free Store and to have adequate supply for our Mobile Free Store to serve schools in outlying areas of our region. Classroom Central's corporate partnerships give us the buying power to turn each donated collar into $6.00 worth of school supplies.

Financially disadvantaged children have many obstacles to overcome; not having school supplies shouldn't be one of them.

  • History:
  • Classroom Central is celebrating it's tenth anniversary. Founded in 2002 by a handful of concerned business professionals to serve 36 schools in Charlotte, NC, we now serve over 200 schools in six school districts in our region. This past school year 2011-2012, Classroom Central served 9,000 educators and 132,000 students. In order for us to fulfill our mission, we utilize over 4,500 volunteers to help stock our Free Store, to sort donated school supplies and to help us during our teacher shopping days.

As an example, last school year (2011=2012), Classroom Central gave out over 65,000 one subject notebooks, over 630,000 pencils and over 350,000 pens. The need is great and we want to be able to serve more students in need.
