  • Mission:
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of Monmouth & Middlesex Counties' mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported 1:1 relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.

  • Overview:
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of Monmouth & Middlesex Counties (BBBSMMC) is a local affiliate of the nation’s leading mentoring organization. Although BBBS of America provides guidance and evidence-based best practices, BBBSMMC receives no funding through national. We are a donor funded, non-profit organization.

We are proud to be part of an organization that has been perfecting the mentoring experience since 1904. BBBS of America is the nation's oldest and largest mentoring agency, with over a century of experience of matching disadvantaged children with carefully screened, trained and supervised mentors. Our 1:1 mentoring programs are designed to combat the risk factors and enhance the protective factors in the youth we serve to reduce anti-social and delinquent behaviors and improve educational success and relationships.

Our agency provides 1:1 youth mentoring for vulnerable youth ages 6 to 18 through our Community Based, School Based and Beyond School Walls Programs. By placing at-risk kids in a quality mentoring relationship, we are able to provide them with the tools they need to become competent, confident and caring members of their community.

BBBSMMC anticipates serving 720 at-risk youth in 2017. To serve the children this year, we will manage 775 volunteers who will log over 45,000 hours. Our agency only operates with a full-time staff of nine who are assisted by four interns. In terms of the number of children being served, we are one of the fastest growing of the 60 BBBS agencies in the Northeast.

Though we are growing, the quality of our mentoring efforts remains our #1 priority. This is evidenced by BBBS of America’s Nationwide Leadership Council (NLC) naming BBBSMMC as a recipient of the 2015 BBBS of America Quality Award. The Quality Award recognizes the hard work of agency leadership and staff to provide high-quality programming for the children we serve and it is the second year in row our agency has earned this honor.

  • History:
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of Monmouth & Middlesex Counties started as Big Brothers Big Sisters of Monmouth County in 1976. Resident Curtis Colby befriended a boy, Joey. Joey’s father had died and he was in counseling at CPC. Curtis spent time with Joey as a CPC volunteer. He soon realized the positive impact his one-to-one relationship had on Joey. Joey had a younger brother who had an equal need for an adult man in his life and to meet the need for additional mentoring our agency was established.

We recognized the same need for mentoring in Middlesex County and through our efforts we gained approval to serve the at-risk youth (Littles) in the county on January 1, 2011. We are proud to be America’s premier mentoring organization and bring our experience and mentoring programs to a county that did not have an official Big Brothers Big Sisters presence. BBBSMMC’s programs have benefitted over 7,500 children to date.
