  • Mission:
  • To enable low income single parents in Arkansas to achieve self-sufficiency through post-secondary education. Our grassroots leadership approach offers incentive scholarships at the county level and much encouragement and support of students.

  • Overview:
  • The impoverishment of single parent families in Arkansas led by women is severe. Our state has the second lowest median family income in the nation and female-led single parent families are at the bottom of the economic ladder. Over 50,000 mothers and their children are impoverished and many more are just above the poverty line. The intent of ASPSF is to encourage and help many low income single mothers and fathers to view a college education as attainable and affordable, given the wide array of available resources. We also want them to know that many others in their circumstances have been able to earn a college degree through courage, determination and the support of the community.

We empower single parents to believe in themselves through success in higher education, the best route to prosperity. This is accomplished through the provision of locally administered financial aid on a semester by semester basis. Students cover such needs as childcare, transportation, rent and other basic expenses with our scholarships and are mentored to access many other resources such as low-cost housing, health services, food, and insurance. They are also offered support and encouragement througout their academic careers by caring Board members who offer a shoulder to lean on and much good infomation on available non-financial resources.

ASPSF operates through a network of county-based Single Parent Scholarship Funds (SPSF's). We provide annual matching grants, on-site training and guidance and other services to our affiliates. All SPSF's are led by volunteers who determine eligibility guidelines, interview, select, and mentor student awardees. In some areas, paid staff administer larger scholarship funds which are governed by volunteer community leaders.

ASPSF receives funding from a variety of private and public sources. These include:

    *The Walton Family Foundation
    *The Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation
    *The Charles A. Frueauff Foundation
    *The Windgate Charitable Foundation
    *The Fayetteville Area Community Foundation
*The Arkansas Dept of Higher Education
*The Arkansas Office of Community Services

  • History:
  • ASPSF is a natural outgrowth of two "vanguard" Single Parent Scholarship Funds in northwest Arkansas. These Funds were established in 1984 by volunteers who recognized the dramatic increase in distressed families led by women. A partnership between anti-poverty agencies and community leaders led to the initial donations toward scholarships and witnessed the first scholarship awards in Spring, 1984 in Washington County. The ensuing six years saw a rapid increase in financial support of scholarships from such groups as United Way, family foundations, civic organizations, churches, businesses and individuals.

In 1990, philanthropist Bernice Jones of Springdale provided a three year seed grant to expand Single Parent Scholarships into the other 73 counties in Arkansas. With Jones Trust support, ASPSF was incorporated and staff hired to develop a statewide presence of Single Parent Scholarship Funds. An integral stategy in such development was the availability of affiliate matching grants, stimulating local giving and challenging affiliates to create diverse donor bases.

As of October 23, 2012, ASPSF affiliates have awarded 31,696 scholarships worth $17,615,903. Affilaite matching grants have totalled $4,381,115. The retention and graduation rate of students has annually ranged from 82% to 92%, over 40% above the average graduation rate of entering freshmen in Arkansas public colleges and universities.
