General

  • Mission:
  • The Black Student Fund (BSF) is dedicated to bringing people together by maintaining access to independent schools for African American children from low to modest income households.

  • Overview:
  • The Black Student Fund has built a multidimensional set of programs that support its mission and influence changes within the schools and the community as a whole. In addition to providing scholarships and essential support services to low-income African American children, grades pre-kindergarten through twelth, our comprehensive programs include outreach and referral services featuring an Annual School Fair; summer school programs; and, through our Institute for Equity, Race & Education, we conduct courses in cross-racial communication for school faculty and administrators.

  • History:
  • Established in 1964 to desegregate the independent schools of metropolitan Washington, DC and make them accessible to African American children, irrespective of economic status, the Black Student Fund has provided many children with the opportunity to gain a quality education. BSF has prepared children for life and helped create a rich, equitable educational environment in which students and adults from different racial and economic backgrounds benefit from regular interaction.
