  • Mission:
  • The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank's mission is "fighting hunger, improving lives, and strengthening communities". We are the largest non-profit food distribution organization in Central Pennsylvania and are committed to increasing public awareness and understanding of the hunger problem.

  • Overview:
  • The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is the largest non-profit food distribution organization in Central Pennsylvania and one of the top food banks in the nation for operational performance. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is a complex operation, comprised of 47 dedicated staff members, a fleet of 14 trucks, and 2,500 volunteers annually whose contributions are the equivalent to an additional 13 fulltime employees. We are one of more than 200 food banks affiliated with Feeding America, the nation’s largest non-profit hunger fighting organization, which solicits and enables donations of food product at a national level.

The Food Bank reduces hunger in 27 counties in Central Pennsylvania by distributing nutritious food to a network of community organizations that directly serve people who are hungry.

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank’s core service, known as the Food Security Network, involves the solicitation, procurement, processing and distribution of food. In FY 2011-2012, the Food Bank distributed nearly 21.5 million pounds of food. This is the equivalent of more than 17.9 million meals, with a wholesale value of more than $35.5 million, and represents a 7% increase over the previous year. This food was distributed via our 700 member agencies (emergency food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, low income child and senior centers, etc.) reaching approximately 46,000 people weekly who experience food insecurity or hunger.

The Food Bank will be a good custodian of a grant awarded by The Lawrence Foundation as a full 97% of every dollar donated goes to feed hungry people. We are also pleased to let you know that we have received Charity Navigator’s top rating of four stars for “exceptional” financial performance that “exceeds industry standards”.

  • History:
  • The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank started as a one-day demonstration project on World Food Day in 1981. To address the needs of hungry families in Central Pennsylvania, the Food Bank began permanent operations on Oct. 16, 1982.

Originally, the Food Bank was located in a converted movie theater in Steelton. In 1991, we initiated a capital campaign, raising $1.5 million directed to the construction of a brand new warehouse, and in 1994, we relocated to our current facility in Harrisburg. Our headquarters and warehouse is convenient to all major routes which plays a large part in our ability to secure food products from donors. Our location in the capital city provides us with greater accessibility to our legislators and other anti-hunger organizations.

In 1999, we added another 15,000 square feet of warehouse space, along with a walk-in freezer. In May 2012, we finalized a 28,000 square foot warehouse expansion, tripling our dry storage capacity. This $3.5 million project was funded privately by regional corporations and foundations and by the Food Bank’s endowment program and general reserves.

In 2002, a warehouse facility was added in Williamsport, to serve the northern 11 counties of the Food Bank’s 20,000 square mile service territory.
