  • Mission:
  • The mission of Braille Institute is to eliminate barriers to a fulfilling life caused by blindness and severe sight loss.

  • Overview:
  • Founded in 1919, Braille Institute is one of the largest and most comprehensive blind services organizations in the country. Our mission is to eliminate barriers to a fulfilling life caused by blindness and severe sight loss. All of our services are provided completely free of charge.

We offer adaptive living skills classes, low vision consultations, adult education, child development services, youth independence-building and career readiness programs, braille publishing and recording, and an award-winning library for blind, visually impaired, and reading disabled people. Services are available through five regional centers located in Los Angeles (headquarters), Rancho Mirage, Anaheim, San Diego and Santa Barbara, and through more than 250 community outreach locations. Last fiscal year (July 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012), we served more than 81,000 individuals, the most in our 93-year history.

  • History:
  • Braille Institute was founded in Los Angeles in 1919 by J. Robert Atkinson. Blinded in an accident, Atkinson established the Universal Braille Press to correct a critical shortage of available braille reading materials. The organization incorporated as Braille Institute of America, Inc., in 1929. Since 1934, Braille Institute has been an official branch of the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped.

Still headquartered in Los Angeles, Braille Institute has since added regional centers in Anaheim (1971), Rancho Mirage (1973), Santa Barbara (1983) and San Diego (1993). Since 1999, our Mobile Solutions vehicles have brought our services to southern Californians who are unable to travel to our regional centers.
