General

  • Mission:
  • The Boys & Girls Clubs of Chaffee County’s mission is to enable all young people to realize their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.

  • Overview:
  • Boys & Girls Clubs of Chaffee County, Colorado (BGCCC) began serving elementary and middle-school youth in Salida in 2005. In 2012 we began to serve High School students in Salida, as well, reaching an even greater population. The proven success of the Salida program spurred the development of a second Club for elementary-school children in Buena Vista, which opened in November 2006. The two sites provide successful programming that promotes the growth of the individual child and is aimed at our (6) positive youth development outcomes: positive self-identity, health & wellbeing, positive values, a commitment to learning, social competency, and community involvement, all asset-based protective factors supporting healthy outcomes.

  • History:
  • The Boys & Girls Clubs of Chaffee County (BGCCC) was founded in 2005 as a result of a community steering committee’s recommendation to merge two existing youth programs in Salida into one nationally recognized program. As a result of increasing demand as well as the immediate success of the program in Salida, a second unit was opened in 2006 in Buena Vista. Both Clubs were started in response to a needs assessment that identified the lack of constructive after-school activities for local youth. This need was especially critical for families from low-income backgrounds. In 2011, both Boys & Girls Club locations in Chaffee County served more than 700 youth, more than 32% of the local school-aged population. In 2012, BGCCC expanded services by opening a Teen Center in the Salida Club and by offering programs to middle-school aged youth in Buena Vista.

In 2009, staff and the Board of Directors created an updated strategic plan laying a bold new vision; by the end of 2019 the Boys & Girls Clubs of Chaffee County will have two permanent facilities, one in Buena Vista and one in Salida, providing quality youth development programs for children ages 6-18 years of age. Expanding the reach of BGCCC to all school-aged youth in Chaffee County is a clear priority.

Programs at both Clubs utilize research-based programs for young people that are engaging, age-specific and outcome driven. While many programs are developed by Boys & Girls Clubs of America, they have been adapted to fit the unique needs of youth in rural mountain communities such as Chaffee County. Youth arrive after school to a healthy snack and participate in their choice of enriching activities that are supervised by trained staff. Each program contributes to our primary goals to increase academic success, improve good character and citizenship, and increase healthy lifestyles. Some programs utilized are Power Hour, Project Learn, Torch Club, Triple Play and SMART Moves.
