General

  • Mission:
  • The mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs of West Georgia is to enable all young people, especially those that need us most, to realize their full potential as responsible, productive, and caring citizens.

  • Overview:
  • The goals of the Boys & Girls Clubs of West Georgia are to provide disadvantaged youth with a safe place to learn and grow, ongoing relationships with caring, adult professionals, life-enhancing programs, character development experiences, and hope and opportunity. Our guidance-oriented character development programs focus on education and career development, health and life-skills, sports, fitness & recreation, the arts, cultural enrichment, leadership development, and community service. The youth development strategy of the Boys & Girls Clubs of West Georgia is to instill a sense of competence, a sense of usefulness, a sense of belonging and a sense of power or influence within all club members. Using these beliefs as a foundation, we have actively sought to enrich the lives of girls and boys whom other youth agencies fail to reach because we want to ensure that our community’s underserved youth have greater access to quality programs and services that will help them acquire the values, skills, and knowledge necessary to enhance their lives and shape their future. With an annual membership cost of only $20 per year, we pride ourselves on never turning a child or family away who is unable to afford our services.
To make sure that all of our members have great futures, the Boys & Girls Clubs of West Georgia has adopted the Formula for Impact, a research-based theory of change that describes how individual Clubs and the Movement as a whole can increase our impact – exponentially – on the young people of America. Our Formula begins with the young people in Clubs – especially those who need us most. It calls for us to consistently provide the most powerful Club Experience possible – by implementing the Five Key Elements for Positive Youth Development, offering high-yield activities and providing targeted programs – all of which help youth achieve priority outcomes. Then, because we also know that attending the Club more frequently and over a greater length of time makes young people more likely to achieve positive outcomes, Clubs must pursue strategies to increase attendance, program participation and member retention.

  • History:
  • Boys & Girls Clubs of West Georgia, established in 1992, is an autonomous, youth development organization that is part of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America national network of more than 4,000 neighborhood-based facilities which annually serve over 4 million young people, primarily from disadvantaged circumstances. For the past 20 years, Boys & Girls Clubs of West Georgia has been in the forefront of youth development, working with young people from disadvantaged economic, social, and family situations. We currently have three sites in LaGrange, Hogansville, and Concord, which are located in Troup and Pike Counties. Our facilities offer daily after-school and full-day summer programs to over 450 members annually.
In 2011, we served 467 youth between the ages of 6-18, whose demographics are as follows: 53% boys, 47% girls; 65% African-American, 7% Hispanic, 23% Caucasian, and 5% Multi-Racial. Ninety-five percent of our members had annual household incomes of $30,000 or less, and 85% of the youth were eligible for free or reduced school lunch. Ninety percent of the families served by our Clubs are headed by a single parent suffering from multiple stresses and few, if any, support systems.
