  • Mission:
  • The mission of the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) is to work together with the people of Africa to ensure that the wildlife and wild lands of Africa endure forever.

  • Overview:
  • AWF is headquartered in Nairobi, and is the leading international conservation organization focused exclusively on Africa. AWF’s long history in Africa gives it a deep understanding of the complex issues surrounding wildlife conservation, and the ability to deliver tangible conservation outputs that have meaningful benefits to both communities and wildlife.

We focus on integrating wildlife and wild lands protection with economic growth, productive livelihoods, and social justice. To this end, AWF implements four priority programs: 1) species conservation; 2) land and habitat protection; 3) sustainable conservation enterprise; and 4) education and capacity building for African people and institutions. We believe this integrated approach is essential for fostering landscapes where people and wildlife can coexist.

  • History:
  • In 1961, African Wildlife Leadership Foundation, Inc. was founded at the height of the African Independence movement to help newly independent African nations and people conserve their own wildlife.

Since then, this organization, now called the African Wildlife Foundation, has played a major role in ensuring the continued existence of some of Africa’s most rare and treasured species, including the elephant, the mountain gorilla, the rhinoceros and the lion. To do so, AWF has invested in Africa’s people by training and educating conservation professionals and developing conservation enterprises (i.e., sustainable business ventures) to improve peoples’ livelihoods while also conserving wildlife.

In 1998, AWF ushered in a new era in conservation with its African Heartlands Program. In essence, we have drawn lines in the sand around large priority landscapes that are key to sustaining a diversity of species well into the future. These landscapes – or Heartlands – are at the heart of everything we do.
