General

  • Mission:
  • To empower students with learning differences to develop skills and valuces necessary for success in the global economy.

  • Overview:
  • Bachman Academy is a non-profit boarding and day school for 6th-12th grade students with learning disabilities such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, ADD and ADHD. We provide traditional academic subjects, taught in small groups, using innovative methods that are individualized for each student’s needs. The program of study is language rich emphasizing active learning. In addition to hands-on academics, the academy offers career-education in mechanics, equine science, woodworking, and horticulture/agriculture. We boast a small student teacher ratio of 5:1.
Bachman Academy’s core curriculum exceeds the credit requirements as set forth by the Tennessee Department of Education. Our students may graduate with 22 credits, as required by the TDOE; however, our four-year students can earn more than 22 credits by graduation. Our high school diploma (for both college and career path) is recognized by the State of Tennessee.

The two pathways for Bachman high school students are Career Education and College Preparatory. Each pathway is designed to lead students toward further education upon graduation. The College Preparatory pathway prepares students for a two–year community college or four-year Liberal Arts college or university. The Career Education path (equine science, horticulture, mechanics, or woodworking) prepares students for a certification program, independent living experience, technical school, or two-year community college.
Even though Bachman is located in a rural area near Cleveland, Tennessee, our students come from all over the United States and the world. We currently have students enrolled from eight states and four countries including Nigeria, Hong Kong, India, and Bermuda. We are unique among the specialty schools in the country, thus parents seek out Bachman for their children.

  • History:
  • Celebrating our centennial year, Bachman Acadmey has been serving the needs of children since 1912, focusing soley on special education since 1999. Rev. John Lynn Bachman founded the acadmey as a mission school for local children. Operations began at our current location in 1950. During the mid-century the school's focus was orphaned and abused children. In 1999 Bachman began offering under-served yout ha unique boarding and day school for students with learning differences.
