General

  • Mission:
  • The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters is to help children reach
their full potential through professionally-supported, one-to-one
mentoring relationships. Our vision is that all children achieve success in life!

  • Overview:
  • We provide quality adult volunteer mentors to at-risk children, ages
5-17. We offer both community-based and school-based matches. Most
of our matches are community-based matches, where volunteers spend
time with the children out in the community, such as attending local
arts or sporting events, eating out, visiting the library, etc. Our school-based matches consist of volunteers visiting the children
at school to eat lunch and then enjoy recess or work on homework
together. Many of these matches eventually convert to
community-based matches in order to further the relationship. After the initial interviews and assessments, our program also
provides continual monitoring, coaching and periodical assessments,
so as to insure a longterm relationship is maintained.
We serve youth in Brown, Schuyler, Cass, Morgan and Adams counties in
Illinois at this time. We are grandfathered in to serve Marion and
Lewis counties in Missouri. We serve boys and girls aged 5-17 from all racial, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds; however, over half of the children we
serve receive some sort of income assistance and approximately 10%
    have parents who are incarcerated.

  • History:
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA) was started in 1904 by
Ernest Coulter. He wanted to put adult male role models in the lives
of children who had lost their fathers through death, divorce or
abandonment. In 1969, LaVerne Norton started the program in Adams
County, Illinois as a graduate thesis project. Big Brothers Big Sisters of
Adams County (BBBS) was first adopted as an official program at
Catholic Charities. In the mid 70's, BBBS spent four years under
Family Services of Adams County. BBBS was then incorporated into
Volunteer Action Center for seven years. In 1986, Big Brothers Big
Sisters of Adams County entered into the affiliation process with
BBBSA, becoming a sponsored program through the YMCA in 1991.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Morgan County was organized in May 1962. In 1991, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Morgan County became affiliated with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.

In January 2003, BBBS of Adams County merged with BBBS of Morgan County
to form BBBS of West Central Illinois (BBBSWCI). This merger has allowed BBBS of Adams County to put all resources into serving more children. We
are drawing on 100 years of experience from our fellow agencies
across the nation to provide efficient, effective one-to-one
    mentoring.

In 2004, BBBSWCI expanded services to Brown and Schuyler Counties, forming one advisory council for the two counties. In 2006 BBBSWCI also expanded services to Cass County. Our agency has seen growth of matches in the last four years.
