  • In cooperation with the community, religious and private sector & governmental entities, we provide comprehensive services to survivors of sexual assault, family violence, child abuse, and elder abuse intending to restore stability and dignity & financial stability.

  • Overview:
  • With an estimated 2008 population of 38,407 residents and a land area of 873.64 square miles, Cooke County has an average of 44 residents for every square mile. Active agricultural land in the area comprises 458,775 acres and farm production or agriculture-related wholesale accounts for more than 53% of the total economic receipts in the county. The population is predominately Caucasian at 81%, with blacks (3.4%), Hispanics (13.3%), and Native Americans (1.1%) comprising the remaining ethnic composition. Asians, Pacific Islanders, Native Hawaiians or those reporting two or more races total approximately 1%. Cooke County is designated as a rural county by HRSA and as a Title I community with more than 76% of school-aged children eligible to receive free or reduced breakfast and lunch program benefits. Because of the rural nature of the service area, various organizations in the community evolved naturally and partnered collaboratively to provide services in the best interests of victims and clients, while also working to reduce duplicating efforts. Abigail’s Arms – Cooke County Family Crisis Center has taken the lead, providing services to include a victim’s impact panel, community outreach and prevention education beyond the public school system, transitional housing and independent living curriculum/activities, BIPP, SART/SANE Project. Our new state-of the-art crisis shelter will be the only facility servicing Cooke County.

  • History:
  • A study made in 1981 by the Gainesville Chapter of the League of Women Voters, pointed to a strong need to help victims of violent crimes in Cooke County. On June 20, 1983, a telephone crisis hotline line was activated. From this initial project grew many services for families in crisis in Cooke County. On June 28, 2008 the organization known as Cooke County Friends of the Family merged with Abigail’s Arms – Cooke County Family Crisis Center, taking the name Abigail’s Arms – Cooke County Family Crisis Center to better capture the organization’s mission. Abigail’s Arms currently has a professional full-time staff of 6, 1 part-time professional counselor and over 40 active volunteers. The Board of Directors is comprised of 15 members providing leadership in executive management and community capacity building. Together, this team has successfully provided 27 years of victim-related services or assistance.
