  • Mission:
  • Calaveras Repertory Theatre is a small theatre company dedicated to innovative, high-quality theatrical productions with an emphasis on challenging new work and exciting interpretations of the classics. We specialize in theatre that explores language and poetry in modern life.

  • Overview:
  • Specifically, Calaveras Rep offers main stage plays (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Hamlet, Candide, Servant of two Masters), school tours ( Page to Stage [children’s literature brought to life on the stage and, Shakespeare!], youth training (our Summer Drama Conservatory) and new play development (our Master Classes and staged readings of new scripts by multicultural playwrights).
Calaveras Rep has a long history of doing large classics in an intimate space (King Lear, Hamlet, Servant of Two Masters). We also have a long history of doing highly successful educational programs (School tours and theatre training programs for all 18 years of our existence).

  • History:
  • CRT was founded in 1995, and since that time has brought Shakespeare to thousands of audience members, young and old, performing in every venue imaginable from a nursing home to a shopping mall to a Maybeck mansion. CRT has brought English language classics - from Samuel Beckett and John Synge to Noel Coward and David Ives, to our permanent space in Milpitas, one of the most diverse city of its size in America. CRT has encouraged new playwrights--Asian, Latino, Black,White--to find their voices by working with top theatre professionals such as Tony Taccone (Berkeley Rep’s Artistic Director), Philip Kan Gotanda (internationally renowned playwright) and Herbert Siguenza. (founding member of Culture Clash, a ground-breaking Latino comedy group). Few arts organization in the Bay Area have done so much with so little creating quality, innovative theatre on an annual budget that would barely build a set for a major company.
