  • Mission:
  • American Bird Conservancy (ABC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to conserve native birds and their habitats throughout the Americas.

  • Overview:
  • ABC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to protecting native birds and their habitats throughout the Americas. Currently, ABC has nearly 36,000 e-mail subscribers, and more than 300 partner organizations throughout the Americas, gained primarily through its leadership roles in the North American Bird Conservation Initiative (NABCI), Partners in Flight (PIF), Bird Conservation Alliance (BCA), National Pesticide Reform Coalition (NPRC), Alliance for Zero Extinction (AZE), and a large international network. Together, ABC and its partners advocate for policy solutions to the most pressing environmental threats to birds, buy land to establish reserves for rare species, restore degraded habitats, conduct applied research, and inform and engage the public on conservation issues. By focusing our work on the greatest threats to bird populations – habitat loss, poor land management, pesticides and toxics, collisions with man-made structures, fisheries management, and invasive species – ABC’s efforts benefit millions of birds, including dozens of endangered and threatened species and hundreds of more common bird species every year. With a growing staff of over 50, ABC has offices in The Plains, VA, and Washington, DC and full-time staff in Florida, Georgia, Hawai‘i, Idaho, Missouri, Montana, Minnesota, New York, Oregon, and Texas. ABC has a track record of outstanding performance due largely to our results-oriented, partnership-based approach to bird conservation, and we are well positioned to build on that record of success.

One of the greatest strengths of ABC’s Pesticides Program is our founding and leadership role in the National Pesticide Reform Coalition (NPRC), which enables ABC and its partners to team up to protect the environment, birds, farm workers, children, pets, and wildlife from pesticides that pose unreasonable risks. ABC and its partners have succeeded in cancelling or restricting the registration of more than 20 pesticides in the U.S., protecting the lives of millions of birds, other wildlife, and people.

  • History:
  • ABC was founded in 1994 by Dr. George Fenwick, who believed there were several niches in bird conservation that had yet to be filled by other conservation organizations. Issues such as feral and free-roaming cats, collisions with buildings and wind turbines, pesticides, and lead were being ignored by big non-profits. Since its founding, ABC has taken on all of these issues with great success. Along with our partners, ABC has had a hand in canceling over a dozen pesticides that were particularly harmful to birds. In 2002, we helped to create the NPRC which has led to increased collaboration between conservation organizations on pesticide issues. ABC has also been involved in EPA's Pesticide Program Dialogue Committee (PPDC) which allows us access to senior EPA staff and scientists. Now, with over 10 years of experience working on pesticide issues, and close to two decades of bird conservation experience, ABC is known for its effective partnership-based bird conservation and has become a resource for all those in the bird conservation community.
