  • Mission:
  • Our mission is to provide a safe, secure environment for children that fosters physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development. Parents, as a child’s first and most important teachers, are an important part of the program. The center strives to develop a partnership between home and school, which benefits the development and growth of all children while providing affordable, quality child care for the children of Staunton and surrounding communities.

  • Overview:
  • Community Childcare Center specifically reaches out to those families who need quality early childhood education and care but financially find it difficult to obtain. Current enrollment includes 36% of children receiving DSS Child Care Subsidy, and 34% receiving financial aid directly from the center. The center is licensed by the state and will be entering into the Virginia Star Quality Initiative in an effort to assure quality professional development for staff, over the next fiscal year. In addition, the center works with local DSS, ChildCare Aware of Virginia and SRMH Family Connection to bring quality programs and training to staff, including Ages and Stages assessments, standard licensing requirements and certification for eligible staff in Child Development Associate Credentialing.

The center also has partners with local businesses and community leaders. This has allowed the center to see improvements in the overall structure of the facility creating a safe and inviting environment.

  • History:
  • The center opened in 1971, when the founders saw a need for a community preschool that offered quality, affordable child care. When evaluating the types of day care that were available to families it was clear that there was a need for quality day care that took into account the needs of those families who did not qualify for DSS Child Care Subsidy, and yet struggle financially. This was the impetus for Community Child Care to become the only nonprofit preschool in the greater Staunton, Augusta, Waynesboro area that has a sliding fee scale and scholarship program in place for families and children enrolled.

Over time the center has seen ebbs and flows of success with carrying out this mission. After a series of overturn in executive staff the center is experiencing challenges. The board has recognized this and made a strategic decision to recruit a local seasoned executive director who has leveraged community resources and supports that have assured the center ability to continue serving the children enrolled.
