General

  • Mission:
  • For over 80 years, Buxton has been educating students in the progressive tradition: We believe that all people learn best by doing, and that experience is the most powerful teacher of all. To that end, students are engaged, inspired, and nurtured in all aspects of their intellectual, artistic, and social lives in the context of a small, egalitarian community

  • Overview:
  • At Buxton, students are challenged to participate fully and meaningfully in their academic pursuits; called to create an authentic intellectual culture in the classroom; encouraged to immerse themselves in creative activity; and expected to live a conscious, responsible life in the context of a receptive and responsive community. Central to the school experience are: the commitment we make to traveling inside and outside of our country to gain understanding of how communities and governments work; the value of students contributing their ideas, energy and labor to the care and maintenance at the school; and the importance of artistic exploration and expression. Buxton is committed to diversity of every kind, believing this enriches students’ experiences at school and in the world beyond. We strive to make sure that Buxton students graduate knowing that they must be active participants in and contributors to their communities and the world.
Ellen Geer Sangster, who founded Buxton School in 1928, articulated the values of the school in an essay called “Buxton Believes.” Those core values remain vibrant and true to this day. As she said:

    “Buxton believes
    • that education should be the process of learning how to live fully as an individual and effectively in the social world.
    • that the child can develop into an adult who knows how to live only by first living fully and effectively as a child.
    • that to do so, the school must provide challenges and outlets for all of his or her potentialities.”

We continue to embrace Ellen’s fundamental beliefs, while adding some over the 80-plus years that Buxton has been educating young people.

    We believe
-that academic pursuits must be connected to a vibrant life.
-that young people can be trusted to live lives that are balanced, ethical, and productive.
-that people thrive in a small community that honors differences and encourages connection.
-that education should prepare young people to engage in the world and make it a better place.

  • History:
  • Buxton was founded in 1928 by Ellen Geer Sangster as an elementary day school in the progressive education model in Short Hills, NJ. Over the years, it grew to include an upper school. In the 1940's, the upper school was relocated to Mrs. Sangster's family's summer home in Williamstown, MA. The lower school remained in Short Hills and became Far Brook School, still in existance today.
