  • Mission:
  • Chikaming Open Lands protects the open spaces of Southwest Michigan, preserving the distinct natural character of the area while conserving wildlife habitat and building a healthier watershed. Our work enhances the quality of life for all who live in or visit this area.

  • Overview:
  • As an area just 90 minutes from Chicago, Southwest Michigan has been vulnerable to development as a "second homeowner community." In the 1990s building flourished, threatening the distinct natural character of our wooded lakefront and open farmland.

Chikaming Open Lands utilizes conservation easements and outright land ownership to reduce pollution in our watershed and Lake Michigan, as well as to provide essential habitat for migrating and resident birds and animals, many of which have threatened or endangered status in the state. We also endeavor to bring educational programs into the community with public events like nature hikes, bringing presentations on Michigan native animals to the community, and we are developing a school program to engage children.

COL's operating budget is around $300,000, with additional program activities adding another $200,000 to our overall budget. Generous grant support covers these program activities, and over 470 households provided operating support to Chikaming Open Lands in 2012 through donations and benefit ticket purchases.

  • History:
  • COL was founded in 1999 by two couples who have deep family connections to Southwest Michigan and did not want to see the landscape of the area changed. In the early days, the organization was entirely volunteer run, but did complete a few significant projects.

By 2006, COL received a major watershed protection grant from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, necessitating the addition of a Land Protection Specialist as the first staff member. Funds from the grant made it possible for COL to cover many acres of land with conservation easements, and by 2008 the total inventory of protected land reached 800 acres.
