  • Mission:
  • The mission of the Athens YMCA is to provide programs that build healthy body, mind, and spirit for all.

  • Overview:
  • The YMCA provides essential services for youth including summer camps, supervised sports, swim lessons, and after school activities which offer non-competitive programs, study hall and value lessons each day.

The Athens YMCA serves over 400 youth each quarter through afterschool programs and 700 children in summer day camp. Daily programs include swimming lessons, teen fitness, study hall, football, basketball, arts and crafts, track and field, mountain biking, cheerleading, soccer, Tae Kwon Do, modern dance, and seasonal indoor/outdoor games and activities.

YMCA programs help youth develop the character required to cope with the pressures of growing up in today’s world. Our goal is to help kids feel good about themselves, enjoy life, and to deter them from the dangers of drugs or gangs. Old-fashioned values like caring, respect, honesty, responsibility and faith are taught by positive role models on a daily basis.

For adults, the Athens YMCA offers a variety of activities including fitness classes, racquetball, basketball, walking trails, a regulation track, cardio equipment, free weights, and Cybex equipment. Senior citizens participate in many YMCA senior fitness classes including arthritis water classes, water aerobics, and specially designed YMCA “Gold” classes. They also hold many social functions at the YMCA. A registered nurse is on hand two days per week to perform basic wellness tests, health screenings, and to make referrals.

The YMCA’s youth and adult programs provide fellowship and fitness in a safe environment. Programs such as track and field provide participants with increased confidence as they challenge themselves to meet their goals. The community benefits greatly from having a place where families can gather and participate in so many diverse activities. We have partnered with local agencies such as the March of Dimes and Relay for Life. We also partner with local public and private schools in Clarke and surrounding counties.

  • History:
  • The Athens YMCA is one of the oldest YMCAs in the nation. It was founded in March 1857, just thirteen years after the national movement started. In 1967, our present facility was opened for use. We currently serve over 8,000 members including youth, men and women. The programs offered now are increasingly different and yet the mission behind the Y remains the same.
