  • Mission:
  • The Community Foundation of Utah’s mission is to harness Utah’s entrepreneurial spirit in service to the common good through smart philanthropy.

  • Overview:
  • Like the more than 700 community foundations across the United States, we are a tool to gather assets and ideas that will serve our region for good and forever. We ‘engage the giving minds’ of knowledgeable, passionate people who are ready to make a difference.

We seek out the best emerging ideas in philanthropy and share them with individuals, corporations, and foundations as we each work to help communities progress. We provide personalized philanthropic services to individuals and families committed to making a long-term impact with their giving. By engaging with individuals and organizations across Utah, we connect financial, human, and intellectual resources with the people and agencies that have an impact.

Until 2008, Utah was the only state in the nation without a vibrant, statewide community foundation. In a few short years we have grown to over 80 funds with a historic value of nearly $14 million, including a general endowment called the Utah Fund, Donor Advised Funds and scholarships, and Field of Interest Funds. One of our Field of Interest Funds, the Utah Natural Heritage Fund, is the lead for our environmental convening efforts.

The foundation employs a full time Executive Director, Programs Manager, Operations Manager and a .75 Donor Relations specialist. The professional staff is supplemented by internships funded by private donors or local Universities.

  • History:
  • The Community Foundation of Utah was created in 2008 by a group of residents who wanted to band together to do good –and our goals are still that simple. How can we make Utah an even better place to live? How can we help the people who live here help each other? How can we make giving so easy, so effective, and so rewarding that everyone who is able to join us, will?

In just a few short years, the Foundation has grown from an idea to an important, innovative part of Utah’s third sector. We have robust programs in the three areas core to the work of all community foundations: supporting the development of local philanthropy and endowments, strengthening the nonprofit sector, and convening the community around important issues. Among our successes:

    - To bring new philanthropic tools to Utah, we led the state's first statewide online day of giving called "Love UT Give UT" and helped nonprofits, schools and universities raise $800,000 in 24 hours.
    - As part of our community-building mission, we established the "Enlightened 50" or "E-50". Each year, we ask the community to nominate individuals creating positive, lasting change in our state. These individuals then each select their top 5 choices, and the 50 top nominees join the ranks of the "E-50". Members range from leadership in the LDS Church to Tim deChristopher, who is serving a term in prison for environmental activism.
    - We partner with Ernst & Young to add a Social Entrepreneur of the Year to their annual awards program, bringing attention to social enterprise.
    - The Utah Social Enterprise Collaborative (USEC) is a network of individuals and entities dedicated to building and supporting social enterprise in Utah. Members include nonprofit organizations, social purpose businesses, grant makers, lenders and investors, educators, corporations, and individuals.
    - Each year we hold an average of 12 events designed to increase the capacity of the nonprofit sector and engage businesses in this effort. In the past 6 months, for example, we have coordinated a legal clinic covering 10 individual topics with the firm of Dorsey & Whitney, a training on the concepts of Nail It To Scale It with Utah Valley University, an intensive 6 week class on leadership development with GE Capital Bank, and a clinic on insurance and liability needs with a local broker.
    - To access the skills of entrepreneurs, the Foundation holds 'speed mentoring' events for nonprofits. These events and our Social Innovation Challenge have involved more than 150 different entrepreneurs and dozens of nonprofits, statewide.
    - We are regularly asked to convene community meetings on a variety of topics, from community needs assessment meetings for our local Community Reinvestment Act banks, to topical discussions on data collection, demographics and the impact of the recession on the nonprofit sector.

The Foundation's leadership is representative of the diversity of our state and its people, and has a deep understanding of the needs and strengths of our communities. We focus our talents, energies and perspectives on a single purpose: making Utah an even better place.
