General

  • Mission:
  • "BethHaven Incorporated provides a home for adults with severe and persistent mental illness." Most of our residents live under the poverty level and are at risk of becoming homeless without assistance. In addition, all of our residents are persons who are at great risk of institutionalization for mental illness in either large public institutions or nursing homes. Indeed, many of them lived in these institutions prior to coming to BethHaven. The stigma of living in these circumstances, as well as the disease itself often causes people to withdraw from society and feel nonproductive and useless. BethHaven’s goal is to prevent institutionalization and to enhance emotional well-being. Compassionate and skilled care in an environment that provides structure helps residents remain safe and emotionally stable which contributes to less anxiety and a sense of belonging. Often, our residents become stable in relationships with family members and others when supported in this manner.

  • Overview:
  • BethHaven is a place to call home with home-made meals, a caring staff of 15 persons members who assist with taking medication, social activities, and transportation to medical appointments. Yearly, we provide approximately 32,500 meals, 21,000 medication passes, and 1,600 actvity and transportation trips to medical appointments. Trained staff members participate in appointments to inform medical staff about resident behavior/needs observed. Research and our experience confirm that the monitoring of resident medications and behavior that is assessed daily result in fewer hospitalizations for those with chronic mental illness. This stability contributes to less anxiety and a sense of belonging. Often, our residents become stable in relationships with family members and others when supported in this manner. Reducing homelessness in our community means that fewer tax dollars are spent on homeless resources. Our community has a shortage of resources for those with mental illnesses as indicated by the estimated 8-10 week delay for new clients to receive psychiatric medication treatment at the community mental health center. Residents who are emotionally stable demonstrate to our community that those with mental illnesses can be constructive members of society, reducing the negative stigma associated with mental illness. . We provide a rich activity program to enhance residents’ lives. We are the only non-profit group home for those with severe mental illness in Colorado Springs. BethHaven is investigating opportunities to expand it’s facilities to serve additional residents.

  • History:
  • BethHaven was started by a mother concerned for the future of her son who has a severe and persistent mental illness. She was concerned that if anything ever happened to her, the care of her son was in jeopardy. The mother and her friend bought the property on 504 East Williamette in Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1980 with the purpose that the home would only be used for residents like her son. Known as BethHaven House housing 12 residents, the mission remains the same today. Her son came to live at BethHaven in 2004 and continues to reside here. In 1994, BethHaven acquired the adjoining property, a large victorian home that houses 16 residents and two persons living in efficiency apartments. The Duncan Hart House was named after Dr. Hart who owned the large home moved it in two pieces to it's current address. Shortly after the move, a Fanny Mae Duncan purchased the home. Famous jazz musicians were housed here who played at the Cotton Club owned by Ms. Duncan. After it's purchase by BethHaven, it was renovated for 18 additional individuals to live who have a major mental illness. The mission of providing a home to live for those with chronic mental illness continues today!
