  • Mission:
  • The mission of the Children's Grief Center is to provide a safe and supportive environment where children, teens and their families can share experiences and feelings while grieving a death.

  • Overview:
  • In order to overcome the pitfalls of unresolved childhood bereavement, young people need an age-appropriate venue in which to work out what is happening within themselves and within their families as a result of the death of their loved one. Children are magical thinkers and often blame themselves for the death – they say things like, “If only I’d gotten better grades, my dad wouldn’t have had that heart attack.” As adults, we can’t talk them out of it – but in a safe and supportive environment with kids their own age, going through the same thing, they can start to face those irrational & destructive beliefs they have created and start to heal. Support groups at CGC are designed to give a grieving child the opportunity to talk, draw, write, play or act out their experiences and to process these experiences with others who are going through the same thing. Group activities may include art projects, puppet shows, reading children's stories about different kinds of death, writing stories, etc. Families are provided with a complementary dinner before groups start. The dinner is important – not because all of our families are necessarily indigent (although some are, death crosses all socio/economic lines); but the dinner gives the families 30 minutes to be together, and to nourish themselves before going into a group where face what is probably the worst thing to ever happen to them.
Our vision is for all grieving families to receive the caring support they need to foster hope for the future. We anticipate serving 425 young people and their adult caregivers in fiscal year '13-'14.

  • History:
  • Incorporated in 2000, CGC has been providing free support groups for grieving families since 2001.
In 2001, the Grief Center served 38 children and adults in grief support groups. Currently we serve approximately 400 people per year. In January 2006, a satellite location was added on Albuquerque’s West Side. In 2008, The Children’s Grief Center was the recipient of the Distinguished Contribution to New Mexico Families Award from the New Mexico Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. In January 2009, we began offering Spanish-language support groups for bereaved adults. In August 2011, CGC moved to a new, larger facility in the North Valley, near the Rio Grande Nature Center, co-located with another nonprofit organization - All Faiths - to share resources and efficiently serve Albuquerque’s most vulnerable children. This beautiful location allows us to provide more robust services to a greater number of families in peaceful, healing setting. Last year, in response to demonstrated need, we hired a new Program Coordinator - who implemented two additional nights of support groups - thereby eliminating the chronic wait list bereaved families have had to endure as they wait for a space to open in these specialized, unique support groups. CGC also provides educational presentations on the special needs of grieving children for public and private school counselors and teachers, medical and mental health workers, and more.
