General

  • Mission:
  • Broward Partnership for the Homeless, Inc. is committed to reducing homelessness by promoting independence and self-worth through advocacy, housing and comprehensive services.

  • Overview:
  • Broward Partnership for the Homeless operates the Broward County Central Homeless Assistance Center/Huizenga Family Campus (Center), a 57,000 sq. ft., 200-bed emergency homeless shelter situated on 2.7 acres near downtown Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Each year the Center serves as home to more than 1,200 homeless men, women and families with children, with an average stay of 60 days for individuals and 120 days for families. The residents’ stay at the Center, although time-limited, represents a unique (and perhaps only) opportunity to stabilize, engage and assist them in reacquiring health, housing and employment in a safe and nurturing environment. BPHI has a documented success rate of nearly 65% for individuals and more than 95% for families, which refers to the number of residents who achieve stable housing and self-sufficiency upon completion of the program and exceeds the countywide goal of 50%. The agency has won best practices awards from the Florida Department of Children & Families and the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development, which also recognized BPHI as one of the 400 best projects in the nation serving the homeless.

  • History:
  • Broward Partnership for the Homeless (BPHI) was founded in 1997 as the result of a strategic private/public alliance that brought together members of the corporate community, local political leadership, public service agencies, individual philanthropists and concerned citizens to address the burgeoning problem of homelessness in Broward County. BPHI was charged by the Broward County Board of Commissioners with the task of raising the initial funds, overseeing construction and subsequently operating a new emergency homeless shelter to replace the “Tent City” homeless encampment, where approximately 400 individuals were living in deplorable conditions under makeshift tents provided by the City of Fort Lauderdale.

On February 1, 1999, BPHI opened the Broward County Central Homeless Assistance Center/Huizenga Family Campus (Center), a 57,000 sq. ft., 200-bed emergency shelter located on 2.7 acres near downtown Fort Lauderdale. Within three weeks of opening, BPHI had processed all of the Tent City residents who sought shelter at the Center or found alternative shelter for individuals who elected not to take advantage of the its services. Since then, BPHI has served more than 19,000 homeless individuals and families and been held as a model program for its comprehensive array of solution-focused services that aim to reduce and prevent homelessness.
