  • Mission:
  • Our Mission Statement:

To help refugees, other immigrants and their families integrate into the American society and realize their full regardless of their cultural background, national origin, religious affiliation, traditions or social barriers. To promote the core values of human dignity through compassionate stewardship initiatives and a platform for mutual understanding, and to encourage altruism through humanitarian social networking.

  • Overview:
  • The African Social and Immigrant Services (ASIS) is a 501(c)(3) organization in North Texas that is an emerging refugee community organization committed to serving mainly the social and immigration needs of the newly arrived and existing African refugees, asylum Seekers and other immigrants, with social integration as they resettle in the United States. ASIS successfully serves more than 250 African refugees and other immigrants annually in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.

In the Dallas/Fort Worth area, we have identified numerous unfulfilled needs that the newcomers continue to face: language barrier for many of them, culture chock, and others obstacles inherent to a new environment make their integration very challenging. In order to meet those needs in taking in account the culture sensitivity of recipients of its services, ASIS has developed different social programs such as English as Second Language, Basic Computer class, Citizenship Class, Cultural orientation, Transportation (hospital escort and medical interpretation programs, escort and coaching programs for job seekers, escort to the administration offices, etc.), case management (Translation of official documents and notarization, filling of papers work, etc.).

With our own very limited resources based on the volunteering, and without support from individuals or charitable organizations, the vulnerable people who hope benefiting from ASIS’ services were almost left to face their challenges with social integration all alone. Then, we started to seek other means to raise funds to support our programs. After one year of search, we were lucky to secure a small grant from the Federal Government to implement project PERSIST (Partnership Empowering Refugees Seeking Integration in Texas). However, funds obtained at the previous stage of organizational tempo are now being stretched thin as word of ASIS’s services spread deeper into a desperate population and need continues to increase.

  • History:
  • Historic

Mr. Laurent Okuma founded the organization in June 2010 with the support of two local ministers; all three people have experienced at first hand the life of refuge in the United States. The Founder is originated from Democratic Republic of Congo. He practiced the law in his country for 6 years before seeking asylum in the US in 2000. The next year, he was grateful to have secured a scholarship from the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church that paid his Master degree in Laws (LL.M) program at Southern Methodist University (SMU) of Dallas. Since, he decided to devote himself to the African Immigrants Community of Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas. With ASIS, he used his lawyer skills to serve the social needs of immigrants, and resettling refugees from impoverished third world nations as they manage to put behind the atrocities of war, tortures and other harsh treatments from their government officials, on one side, and on the other side, to acclimate in the new environmental culture.
