  • Mission:
  • The Anchorage Park Foundation is building Healthy Parks & Healthy People by mobilizing public support and financial resources for Anchorage parks, trails, and recreation opportunities.

  • Overview:
  • Anchorage is a community with an incredible system of parks and trails. For the past nine years, the Anchorage Park Foundation has been making it possible for volunteers and investors to make park improvements that affect our whole community, one neighborhood at a time. For each private dollar contributed to Anchorage parks and trails, the Anchorage Park Foundation has raised an additional $12.59 in matching funding from federal and state agencies, foundations, and natural resource organizations, totaling $23.4 million since our founding in 2004. The Anchorage Park Foundation works tirelessly to build community through three programs: Challenge Grants, Neighborhood Park Improvements, and Youth Employment in Parks. Contributions and grants to the Anchorage Park Foundation will also create a strong social return on investment. The Anchorage Park Foundation offers volunteer opportunities and public-private partnerships that inspire community ownership. Our volunteers want to see parks taken care of as places for community gatherings, active recreation, or peaceful reflection.

  • History:
  • The Anchorage Park Foundation was created as a result of a public involvement process in 2003 and 2004. Anchorage citizens told the Assembly that it was time for the community to contribute to park improvements, not through the municipality but through a nonprofit whose mission is to mobilize public support and financial resources for Anchorage parks, trails, and recreation opportunities. A Development Director was hired in December 2004, and a fund was established to accept contributions through the Alaska Community Foundation.
Over the past nine years, APF has initiated five successful and ongoing campaigns: Challenge Grants, Neighborhood Parks, Youth Employment in Parks, Parks for All, and a Trails Initiative. We have improved 136 parks, hired 203 teens, awarded 81 challenge grants, and logged over 61,500 volunteer hours. We became a stand-alone nonprofit in February of 2010, and we continue to have a frequent and effective relationship with the Anchorage Parks and Recreation Department.
The Anchorage Park Foundation connects people to their parks and trails through volunteering, financial support, education, and promotion. We hope you agree that APF’s ability to engage the community in meaningful ways, inspire nontraditional partnerships, stretch a dollar, attract grants and introduce new donors to projects, produces results for our parks and trails.
Youth Employment in Parks held its first season in 2007 and is an important part of the Anchorage Park Foundation’s mission and legacy. We have seven seasons of alumni acting who are active in their community and education.
