  • Mission:
  • Common Ground Health Clinic’s mission is to provide quality health care for the greater New Orleans community, and develop and provide programs to address community health care needs through collaborative partnerships. Our goals are to: provide quality integrative healthcare; provide quality healthcare education for preventive self-care; create an environment conducive to patient, staff and volunteer learning; work in an anti-racist paradigm.

  • Overview:
  • Founded by volunteers during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina on September 9, 2005, the Common Ground Health Clinic sees 450-500 patients each month for primary care, and works in the community to address societal factors that contribute to ill health, such as systemic racism and poverty.
Patient services include primary care, herbal medicine, social work, acupuncture, dermatology, endocrinology, referrals to behavior health and cardiology services and Spanish language interpreting. Although fees for service are requested on a sliding scale, no patient is turned away for inability to pay. Additionally, our Latino Health Outreach Project mobile unit sees patients in varying areas of the city each week, and serves as patient advocates for Spanish speakers.
CGHC produces a resource guide that is in use by individuals and organizations all across Greater New Orleans, and is distributed at no charge, and facilitates a weekly women's wellness program, as well as periodic health fairs, classes in nutrition, exercise, cooking and gardening, and community workshops on Undoing Racism.

  • History:
  • CGHC started eleven days after the New Orleans levees breached and the City was under a national mandatory evacuation. Algiers community leaders set up a make-shift health clinic and shelter refuge in a local Mosque. Doctors, residents, physical therapists, medical students, registered nurses, alternative medicine practitioners, and nurse practitioners read the news, felt the need, and traveled from around the country to gather at the “Common Ground” headquarters. In truth and in fact, in its infancy CGHC was the most sophisticated medical service available in the neighborhoods of New Orleans.
In February 2009, CGHC received the highest level of recognition as a “Patient Centered Medical Home” from the National Committee for Quality Assurance. Its unifying vision is to provide excellent primary medical care to all patients, to practice life-saving preventive medicine, and to educate a vulnerable segment of the community. CGHC has recently applied to become a Federally Qualified Health Clinic Lookalike.
