  • Mission:
  • Our mission is to provide toy-filled birthday gift bags to shelters and food shelves so that parents living in poverty can give their child a birthday gift. This results in greater self-esteem and self-worth as well as strengthens bonds in less fortunate families.

  • Overview:
  • Because a child’s birthday is a very special day, we believe every child has the right to have it recognized. However, for children who are living in poverty and/or homeless, birthdays pass with little or no celebration due to a family’s limited financial resources. There are many children who believe they do not have a birthday, or that they deserve a birthday, since it is never celebrated. According to Minnesota Milestones 2011 “Children who grow up in poverty are more likely to lack adequate food and clothing, live in poor housing, become victims of crime and violence, lack basic health care and be less successful in school.” Our birthday bags send a message that every child is important. During 2012, 126,293 kids benefited from our services.

We also cultivate life skills in less fortunate parents and their children because:
    • We know positive interactions make a difference in people’s lives. We allow parents to positively reinforce their child
    • We foster a caring spirit
    • We cultivate parent’s capacity to recognize the individuality of each child
    • We convey the importance of experiencing joy in families
    • We provide parents with a way to experience the power of showing they care
    • We increase parent’s ability to reinforce family values and to create traditions

An additional benefit of the service we provide is an increased public awareness and commitment to the well-being of all children. When volunteering to assemble birthday bags, youth and adults are educated about the importance, value and need to help those who are less fortunate. We work with businesses and civic groups, schools, churches, families and with other nonprofits. We find ways to involve children, teens, those with disabilities, and the elderly. Cheerful Givers actually provides two very important gifts. We are teaching some individuals to receive, and others to give. During 2012, 42,609 volunteers donated 11,369 volunteer hours valued at $247,730. We continue to operate with just one staff to oversee our operation, and in 2012 had only 2% administrative expense in order to maximize the amount of funds being directed to our program.

  • History:
  • Cheerful Givers was established in 1994, after Robin Steele toured a local food shelf and learned that parents would often try to find a favorite canned vegetable or boxed cereal to give their child as a birthday gift. Steele thought of what it must feel like for a parent not to be able to do what most parents take for granted – to recognize their child’s birthday with a gift, and the impact that has on their self-esteem. The next day Steele returned to the food shelf with a donation of 12 birthday bags, each containing an assortment of small toys. All 12 bags were gone in just one day. Soon a Board of Directors was established to ensure the organization had the talents and resources needed to address increased community demand. With a talented board sharing a passionate commitment, along with thousands of volunteers and supporters, the organization has since provided birthday gift bags to more than 600,000 less fortunate children. Cheerful Givers continues to work towards a vision that every child’s birthday will be recognized.
