  • Mission:
  • The Alpha Workshops is the only program in the nation that trains and employs people living with HIV and AIDS in the field of decorative arts. Our mission has four important components: 1) to draw on the powerful healing potential of useful work and creative self-expression 2) to provide training and employment in a flexible, compassionate workplace where the special needs of our employees can be met 3) to compete in the marketplace successfully at the highest level of craftsmanship and artistry and 4) to provide a new model of economic development for people living with HIV/AIDS or other disabilities. We believe that productive work and artistic expression possess therapeutic properties that can improve the quality of life for people struggling with issues of illness, poverty, homelessness, substance abuse, discrimination and other factors that can accompany HIV/AIDS. The structure, community and routine that Alpha provides are critical factors on the road to recovery for our trainees and graduates.

  • History:
  • Alpha was founded in 1995 by Executive Director Kenneth Wampler, a professional decorative painter who turned to social work at the onset of the AIDS epidemic. After a decade of working in AIDS housing with formerly homeless people, Kenneth became aware of the growing, unmet need for vocational job training programs for HIV-positive individuals as they began to live longer, healthier lives. Alpha was created to address this need in an innovative way, integrating the worlds of decorative arts and social services and focusing not just on life-support, but on life enhancement. The twelve years since its inception have seen significantly improved treatments for HIV/AIDS making the existence of programs like Alpha's even more vital. Since our first year of operation, we have seen incredible growth – from an initial budget of $70,000 to almost $1,600,000 this year, from earned income figures of $7,000 in 1995 to $584,000 in 2006, and from an inaugural training class with only two participants to over 150 total graduates, 54% of whom have secured and retained permanent employment in our non-profit design studio.
