General

  • Mission:
  • Centerstone helps people help themselves and each other as they move from poverty to self-sufficiency through programs and advocacy.

  • Overview:
  • Centerstone is dedicated to helping people help themselves and each other as they move from poverty to self-sufficiency through programs and advocacy. Centerstone uplifts people in the community to live better lives on their own through basic needs and empowerment programs. As a community lifeline, we feed the hungry through our Food Bank, prevent homelessness through Housing Assistance, and keep people warm through Energy Assistance. Centerstone engages clients through these basic needs programs with the primary goal to help them move past financial crisis and stabilize their situations. We then align clients to empowerment programs such as our Financial Education program to help them move out of poverty and create pathways of opportunity to a better future.

Centerstone specializes in cultural advocacy, serving many races and ethnicities through interpretation, translation, programs and services tailored to our multicultural clients. Our clients include dozens of ethnicities including African Americans, Asian Americans, Caucasians, and immigrants and refugees from countries such as Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea, Vietnam, Cambodia, China, Mexico, and Russia. Our diverse staff come from all over the globe, speaking nine languages and dialects while specializing in meeting the needs of both native-born and immigrant low-income families. We focus on the poorest individuals and families that are struggling to survive – many who live at 125% of federal poverty levels or below.

Centerstone also serves vulnerable populations such as the elderly and people with disabilities. In 2012, Centerstone helped 2,318 people 67 years of age and older and 1,794 people with disabilities.

  • History:
  • For 49 years, Centerstone has proactively worked to meet the needs of Seattle’s low-income people with relevant, impactful programs designed to provide assistance by addressing the unique obstacles faced by poor families and individuals. Centerstone is one of Washington’s oldest and most respected community organizations founded in the era of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 by community activists looking to provide services for their neighbors in need. In 1979, we joined the Washington State Community Action Partnership, a network of 30 agencies in 39 counties that has partnered together to improve the lives of low-income people throughout the state. Today Centerstone’s programs and services help over 32,000 people a year through our food bank, energy assistance program, housing assistance program, and financial education program.
