General

  • Mission:
  • Ally Mentoring creates a safe environment based on support, respect and validation for GLBTQ youth on their path to becoming young adults.

    Vision:

  • Overview:
  • Ally Mentoring is a program for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender,
and questioning youth. These youth are matched with GLBT adults to
create a safe environment based on support, respect, and validation.
Though each person comes to solidify their identity on their own, it’s
important to recognize that without accurate information, positive
role models, and someone to answer their questions directly, youth are
often unable to obtain the information they need to become
well-rounded adults. No child regardless of their sexual orientation
    should feel alone.

  • History:
  • In 2010, during conversations with at-risk GLBTQ youth, the founders discovered that these youth were drastically underserved by existing mentoring programs, leading to the inception of Ally Mentoring. One 15-year old girl, identified as bisexual, had many unanswered questions about if her natural relationship dynamics were healthy. Another, a 17-year-old gay male, was concerned that the rules of his placement did not allow him to wear any pride-related attire. He felt that he was being put back into the closet and feared he would begin to self-harm again.

These youth need to know the characteristics of healthy relationships, feel self-confidence, and get direct answers to their questions regarding sexual orientation. GLBTQ youth need appropriate and supportive adults with whom to discuss openly about their questions, fears, and highly individual experiences. Ally Mentoring believes that no child should feel alone, regardless of their sexual orientation. We strive to cultivate an environment where GLBTQ youth can realize their own inner value as human beings and as important members of the Omaha metropolitan community.
