General

  • Mission:
  • AIHC's mission is to provide high quality, culturally competent and apprpriate primary care to Native Americans living in L.A. and Orange Counties, CA. and to empower our patients to attain the highest level of health possible through comprehensive medical examinations, in depth health education, regular health re-assessments. AIHC also respects, recognizes and gives special attention to incorporate the traditional Indian healing needs of our patients.

  • History:
  • Founded 2000, AIHC provided direct medical care for its first 2 years with only a volunteer staff of a medical director, nurse practitioner and office coordinator. Our co-founder and Medical Director Javier Davila, M.D. (Apache) personally donated $40,000 to help get the clinic started. In 2003 AIHC received a 3 year start up grant from the California State Indian Health Program. The grant provided funding for infrastrucure development, purchase of medical equipment and employment of key support staff. State grant funding continued uninterupted until 2009 when a severe budget deficit forced the CA. governor to eliminate this entire program thereby affecting all grant funding for 31 Indian clinics located throughout CA.
Additional multi-year foundation support has been obtained from The California Wellness Foundation, The California Endowment, Ralph M. Parsons Foundation, the Weingart Foundation, Kaiser Hospital Foundation, California Community Foundation, S. Mark Taper Foundation, Green Foundation of Pasadena, Sydney Stern Memorial Trust, Norris Foundation, Union Pacific Foundation, the Annenberg Foundation, the May and Stanley Smith Charitable Trust, Bank of the West, Wells Fargo Bank, Union Bank of California, Northrop - Grumman, Verizon, Southern California Edison, Grainger Industrial SupplyCo., San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians, Barona Band of Mission Indians, Morongo Band of Kumaay Indians, the Ho Chunk Nation of Minnesota as well as individual friends of AIHC.
Most significant, AIHC received formal approval in Nov. 2010 from the federal Bureau of Primary Care with the designation as a federally qualified health center - Look Alike clinic. This designation will greatly improve third party reimbursement for treating those patients who are insured by the State of California's Medi-Cal Program.
