  • Mission:
  • The specific purpose of Claire’s Place Foundation is to provide heart felt help to children and young adults diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis, as well as their families for the purpose of improving their quality of life. We hope to accomplish this by heightening awareness and providing education, skills, and support

  • Overview:
  • We have 2 priimary programs available to families living with cystic fibrosis. First is an Extended Hospital Stay Fund and second is a Support Families Network. Below is an explanation of each program.

Extended Hospital Stay Fund: We understand the financial stress that can occur when children with cystic fibrosis have extended stays in the hospital, often in a city far from home. Claire’s Place Foundation, Inc. has set up a special cache of funds available to families with children that are experiencing a hospital stay of at least 14 consecutive days.

If you or your family is in this extended stay position, please apply for financial assistance to help with mortgage, rent, utilities or any other basic necessities by asking your hospital social worker to reach out to us by sending an email to us at the address listed below. We will respond with the application and request a letter of referral. The number and amount of assistance will be determined by the board of directors depending on the amount of funds available at the time the application and referral are received.

Eligibility for our Extended Hospital Stay Fund Program is as follows:

    1. Any dependent diagnosed with cystic fibrosis is eligible for consideration

    2. In order to review the request for financial assistance, a hospital professional (Doctor, Nurse or Social Worker) must send a letter of referral.

This letter may be sent via facsimile, email or postal service and should include the following:

Patient’s full name, date of birth, and diagnosis
    Name of parents or caregivers
    Past treatment information
Dates of current hospital stay (must be a minimum of 14 days consecutive)

Financial assistance is typically a one-time payment for approved applicants paid to a third party vendor on applicant’s behalf. After this one time payment, additional letters of request from the hospital professional may be submitted to Claire’s Place Foundation if further assistance is needed.

Thank you so much for your interest in our program. If you are a child with cystic fibrosis or a family member of a child with cystic fibrosis interested in applying for our extended hospital stay financial assistance or life support program assistance, please have your hospital social worker contact us by sending an email to

Support Families Network: Claire’s Place Foundation is currently developing a program where families living with cystic fibrosis can communicate with each other and share their experience, strength and hope with newly diagnosed or isolated families looking for support.

Social workers at partnering hospitals will provide families with children with cystic fibrosis information about Claire’s Place Foundation, Inc. Families feeling uncertain and isolated will be offered support and information on how to work through the treatment and care process by other parent volunteers. Over the next 5 years, these programs may expand to include actual activities brought to the hospital for children and families to participate in, tool kits, local support groups for families and other groups for youth suffering of cystic fibrosis.

If you are interested in becoming a support family or are in need of a support family to speak with, please send an email to and we will respond with more information.

  • History:
  • Claire’s Place Foundation is named in honor of Claire Wineland, now a teenager, who has been living with cystic fibrosis her entire life.

Claire was born with cystic fibrosis or “CF”, a genetic disease that causes excessive mucus secretions and collection, especially in the lungs. In her short life, Claire has undergone dozens of surgeries and has spent weeks at a time in the hospital. This is not, however, what characterizes her. Claire is a singer, an artist, a composer, and a natural-born comedian. She radiates with a warmth and wisdom beyond her years. She has been called a “little Buddha” a “bridge among people”, and a “true old soul.” She is precious to anyone who has met her, especially to her mother, Melissa, and her father, John.

On April 13, 2010 after a relatively routine surgery, Claire became septic and within 24 hours, was in complete lung failure. Her parents were given the option of watching Claire die or putting her on a dangerous oscillator vent, which no child with CF has ever come off of. Her parents opted to put her on the high powered vent and into a drug induced coma so the doctors could try everything possible to reverse the damage to her lungs and her body.

What followed was a remarkable two-week journey of prayer, love and healing. The family was buoyed by an inconceivable amount of support from friends and family. While Claire lay in her coma, kept alive by the maximum amount of life support possible, her friends and family began to pray. Spiritual groups of every possible denomination worldwide were given Claire’s name or in many cases her picture, round the clock vigils of sometimes 50 or more people met in the hospital cafeteria and Claire’s parents and family slept by her side and in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit for 17 strait days.

So many people were inspired by Claire’s journey that a public Facebook page, “Claire Wineland Love, Songs and Updates” , was created to disseminate the seemingly ever changing information. Within two weeks, the fans on the page grew to over 8000. Out of this grew the desire and need for a foundation.

Claire came through this harrowing event inspired, passionate, and very excited about making a difference for other children and teens by sharing her experience, strength and hope with them. She continues to suffer many setbacks but maintains a positive attitude and believes this is the key to living a fulfilling life – despite being burdened with such a deadly disease.

Claire and her parents want other families to experience the benefit from the kind of support that they received and continue to get; hence, this is the motivation for the foundation. Claire’s experiences have catapulted her into a position of being a spokesperson and an inspirational model for people living with this disease. She has documented and created videos on how to enjoy life with Cystic Fibrosis and live life to the fullest. Claire’s Place Foundation is a way for Claire to give back and make meaning of what she has had to go through; the foundation is her way to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.
