General

  • Mission:
  • The Center for Compassionate Care has a mission to provide counseling and support to those affected by issues of grief, loss, and tragic diagnosis.

  • Overview:
  • The Center for Compassionate Care offers individual, couples and family counseling, as well as support groups, to clients with a wide-range of issues relating to grief. A variety of support groups are also available for children, teens, and parents, as well as individuals diagnosed with breast cancer and breast cancer survivors and those who love and care for them.

Costs for counseling services are assessed on a sliding scale. Some services are covered through grants from foundations or private donors.

An additional program offered specifically to children who are dealing with grief and loss is Camp Mariposa. The three-day summer camp program allows children an opportunity to meet others their age who have also experienced a significant loss in their life. Camp Mariposa is a fun filled weekend of healing activities and powerful ceremonies honoring the child’s loved one.

  • History:
  • The Center for Compassionate Care was established in 2002 under the auspices of Nathan Adelson in response to a need in the community for access to low or no-cost community counseling for those affected by issues of grief, loss, anticipated grief and tragic diagnosis.

Since 1991, The Center for Compassionate Care has hosted Camp Mariposa, a bereavement camp for children in Southern Nevada who have suffered the loss of a loved one through death.

The losses from which our children have suffered are great and range from cancer and illness, car wrecks, suicide, accidents and even murder. Camp Mariposa is available to children between 7 and 12 years of age who are grieving and need support.
